Acura’s three-row luxury crossover has been one of the better selling cars in its class for years. Just like with their other models, the MDX is in fact based on an equivalent Honda, in this case the Pilot. This doesn’t change the fact the MDX is refined, full of features and technology with a great set of driving characteristics. Unfortunately though its class is quite competitive and it will likely not be able to compete for that much longer. While Acura hasn’t said much about a successor, the rumors already started flying around about an upcoming 2019 Acura MDX.
There are plenty of people loving the current car but it is not perfect. The interior is far from its more expensive rivals and the layout inside is not ideal either. It also features one of the least powerful engines in its class which is the real letdown here. However, all of this will allegedly change for the upcoming 2019 model. For starters, the new MDX is actually expected to be based on a new platform.
The current model of the car uses the same platform as the ongoing Pilot with its 111 inch wheelbase. This is fine for a seven seats crossover but it doesn’t really work for a luxury car. Why? Well, while it does give the car great handling which is superior to its rivals, it also makes it prone to vibrations. Because of that it seems that Acura may either develop a platform specifically for their models or they may work with Honda in creating one for all their future large front wheel drive cars.
2019 Acura MDX Design
The MDX has been revised a short while ago but the facelift only brought a new front end and that’s about it. The 2019 Acura MDX is expected to build on the design of the current model. So far it seems that Acura’s new pentagonal grille design, “Jewel” headlights or the butch look are all going to stay.
It may receive a bulkier body than before in order to look less like a minivan and more like an SUV. The sporty accents will likely be kept such as the roof spoiler, the dual exhaust on the higher end models or the squat stance.
Interior of Acura MDX
One of the major problems with the current model has been the dual-screen infotainment system. Even though this sounds great at first, it is one of the worst units available in a car this expensive. It is safe to assume the 2019 Acura MDX will return to something more conservative than that.
The new Pilot’s interior is a really good example of what we may see on the upcoming MDX. A larger center mounted screen, a better driving position than before and less buttons. The overall result should be something a lot classier, especially with the addition of all the leather and aluminum usually found on a car as the MDX.
Under the hood
The car moved from a 3.7 liter V6 to a 3.5 liter naturally aspirated V6 a few years ago. While the extra power was great, the new engine needed to be revved a lot higher than the old one. This is usually fine with most cars but luxury models. It is easy to see why people prefer the turbocharged engines of its competitors.
These offer more torque at lower RPM so they can drive them fast without having to try doing it. Because of that, it is safe to assume the future MDX will receive some sort of powertrain with plenty of available torque at low RPM and also plenty of power. Some suggested a hybrid might be used. While this is possible, a turbocharged V6 would make a lot more sense as it would be cheaper and also considerably faster than a hybrid.
