Even though it may not look like it, the current Forester’s chassis has been around for nearly two decades. Subaru decided to keep it that way as it provided a good amount of rigidity, versatility and it was quite cheap to make. However, this won’t go for much longer. There are much stricter safety regulations while fuel efficiency will have to improve and the current platform will soon be left in the dust by its newer competitors. While this would be a problem, Subaru had a new platform in development for quite some time. It seems that the future 2018 Subaru Forester would be the first one to adopt it.
An all new Forester?
Unfortunately the newly released 2018 Forester is not the all new car we have all been expecting for. Instead the car is a mild refresh which brings an entirely new trim level on the market. On top of that Subaru also adjusted the pricing on the car in order to make it a bit of a better deal.
While at first it may not seem like it considering the price increased by $200 across the range, they added quite a few features as extras. Because of that the base 2.5i version of the car starts at $23,710 while its CVT versions costs $1,000 more. The Premium model starts at $26,510 for the manual and $27,100 which is a slightly better deal than its cheaper counterpart.
The new trim level
With this small update they also released the 2018 Subaru Forester Black Edition. This is actually a package which can be had on the 2.5i Premium version of the car. Subaru set the price at $1,150 which may seem much for a design package. However, there are quite a few interesting features available which make it well worth the money.
The regular car is identical to its predecessor but the Black Edition model brings a few exclusive features into the mix. Despite being a Black Edition model, Subaru actually released the car in a few different available color choices. There is a dark gray metallic, crystal white pearl, ice-silver metallic as well as crystal black silica. All of these go extremely well with the subtle exterior upgrades Subaru did in order to elevate the design.
The car gets 18 inch wheels finished in a gloss-black color as well as black-accented inserts throughout. The fog-lamp surrounds, the mirrors, badges as well as the grille have all been painted with a deep black color. The only piece of chrome has been left on the grille surround but this actually goes well with the rest of the car. The big news on the exterior are the LED headlights which have been offered before on the top end Limited edition cars.
Inside the cabin
The 0n also received small upgrades inside which are meant to make the driver feel like in a much more expensive car. The Black Edition gets an exclusive black-cloth upholstery with faux leather side-bolsters as well as a real-leather wrapped steering wheel and shift-knob.
The CVT version of the car also gets aluminum paddle shifters behind the steering wheel which were previously available only on the range-topping XT 2.0 turbo models. The package also includes the all-weather package which comes with a better management software for Subaru’s all wheel drive system as well as a hill-descent control system.
This platform will be highly modular chassis which will eventually be used on all of their cars. On top of that new platform, new engines as well as a new design are going to be used. The end result will finally be a car worth mentioning when getting a new crossover. Also, the new Forester will be the car to set the trend for pretty much all of their future models.
2018 Subaru Forester Release date
There is still no information available about its release date or state of development. However, we are quite sure that test mules are out there in the wild. Also, a production ready version might be seen in the upcoming year while the car could be showcased by the end of 2017.
This would give them plenty of time to finish the car’s development and it will also allow dealers to clear the stock on the current version.
One of the largest changes for the upcoming 2018 Subaru Forester is expected to be the design. So far the car looked like a blown up version of the Impreza.
Well, this will finally change. Instead, the 2018 car will get a more unique look which will have the proportions of a true crossover. The actual size might remain the same. However, pretty much everything else will be new. We actually expect a boxy shape like that of the first generation.
Interior of Subaru Forester
Another big change will be the interior. Here, pretty much all of Subaru’s current cars have been quite bad. Their interiors were bland, gray and not appealing at all. This should finally change. Instead of the large mass of plastic the new cars should receive something a bit more clever.
Things are not going to get more cluttered. Instead, the new Forester will receive a simpler but classier interior with less buttons. Also, the vertical design of the original will change with something a bit more up to date.
2018 Subaru Forester Engine
Hopefully, under the hood the future 2018 Subaru Forester will keep its Boxer engines. Rumors suggested otherwise but more recently Subaru announced that they will stick to four cylinder Boxer engines. This is a great news because these engines made them unique.
However, the size will go down while the power and fuel efficiency will improve. This time around we expect only turbocharged engines to be used on the new Forester. The base model might be the first to use a new 1.6 liter mill with as much as 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. A 2 liter flat-four, similar to what the current WRX has, might also be used.
This should be able to provide 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Despite the increase in power, the fuel efficiency could get better. This should be achieved with the help of an entirely new CVT gearbox.
On top of that new gearbox, the engines will be more efficient thanks to lower friction internals. Its iconic standard all wheel drive system should not change which is certainly going to make the new Forester a great choice for many.
