The Forester is one of the most practical crossovers currently on sale. It offers one of the biggest trunks in its class and it features a considerable amount of space for the 5 passengers. The car also offers a considerable amount of power and engine choices allowing the buyer to get the perfect drivetrain for him. However, it isn’t perfect but it seems most of its perks won’t change until a new generation will be released after 2020. However, until then they just announced the brand new 2018 Subaru Forester Black Edition. While the car’s design doesn’t change much, it gets a brand new package meant to give it a slightly more aggressive look than before.
2018 Subaru Forester – Black Edition In Detail
The chassis, running gear and even engines remain the same as before. The news come in the form of the Black Edition package which will be available in the US in the upcoming months. This is purely a cosmetic package but so far it seems to offer comprehensive set of features that might just be worth it.
For starters, the package can only be had with the base engine on the car’s Premium trim level. This starts at little over $26,300 while the package will add another $1,150. The combined price is still well under the upper trim level so it gives the car great value for money.
What does it offer?
The 2018 Subaru Forester Black Edition comes with all the usual perks and features of the Premium car. However, it also gets a few extras which are well worth the money. For starters the car gets painted in a deep gloss black. On top of that Subaru will add 18 inch wheels, new fog-light trims, badges, mirror-caps as well as a new grille, all painted in the same deep gloss black as the car.
These not only give the car a fresh look but they also make it seem considerably more aggressive than otherwise. Unfortunately the grille still has the chrome surround which takes away from the stealth look but the car’s overall look is much better than that of the regular model. A new set of LED headlights has also been added into the mix.
Inside the cabin
Here the car gets a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter, both otherwise unavailable on this trim level. On top of that it gets a new upholstery with the seat’s bolsters being now wrapped in a faux-leather material while the center of the seat has been wrapped in suede for extra grip.
The car gets a 7 inch infotainment system as well as paddle shifters for the CVT gearbox. While these do not actually change the gears, they do help the driver select one of the six new driving modes which make the Black Edition slightly better on the road.
The 2018 Subaru Forester Black Edition only comes equipped with the larger 2.5 liter naturally aspirated flat-four engine. This is actually the base powertrain of the car and it makes up to 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. While it may not seem that impressive, it actually offers a good amount of performance and fuel economy for its size. The engine is relatively smooth while the sound is considerably better than that of its rivals. The only real drawback is the lack of a manual gearbox which is only available on the most basic trim level. The Black Edition package doesn’t bring anything new into the mix so the car still offers decent performance. It will return as much as 28 MPG on average while hitting 60 MPH in a little over 8.5 seconds which is around the average of its class.
