For quite a few years Skoda’s only crossover was the Yeti. Even though many criticized its design, people soon started to love the funky-looking crossover thanks to its character. Unfortunately the car was getting dated so the manufacturer decided to replace the Yeti with the all new 2018 Skoda Karoq. Even though it still boasts a funky name, there is nothing all that special about the Karoq which is a real shame. The car is based on VW’s MQB front wheel drive architecture and it is nearly identical to the Seat Ateca. In fact it shares the same wheelbase, track width and even overall exterior size. The only real difference between the two is the interior and the front end.
Even though the car doesn’t have the special character of the Yeti, it still offers plenty of cool features that make it a car worthy to take into account. For starters, it is more efficient than its predecessor as well as more powerful. The Karoq is also larger being both wider and longer as well as slightly taller.
The end result is more room inside the cabin without looking unusual. The price hasn’t been revealed for now but we would expect it to cost slightly more than the Seat. This is because the Karoq is aimed at those looking for comfort and features not sporty characteristics.
The design of Skoda Karoq 2018
As we said above, the 2018 Skoda Karoq is mostly identical to its sibling. The car has exactly the same profile as the Seat which has been the case with some VW cars for a while now. The front end on the other hand is a bit more different. Here the crossover shares a few design cues with the more expensive Superb.
It gets a similar grille and headlights which are fortunately not the split units found on the Octavia. The slightly aggressive bumper completes the design making it seem a bit more upmarket than its predecessor. At the back the Karoq has the same tailgate as the Seat but it gets new tail lamps as well as a slightly revised bumper. Skoda will install unique rims on the car as well as they will offer it in quite a few color schemes.
Inside the cabin
Luckily Skoda didn’t borrow the interior from the Seat so the Karoq is a bit more special here. The car features a really classic looking dashboard which doesn’t really stand out through anything. However, at a closer inspection it is quite clear that Skoda thought about it. The center stack doesn’t feature that massive amount of buttons we have been used so far.
Instead, on top of it there is the usual infotainment system while considerably lower we can find the climate controls and that’s about it. On top of that Skoda will also offer things like VW’s fully digital instrument cluster as well as much better materials than those on its predecessor. As an option the 2018 Skoda Karoq will also come with a set of seats that come straight from the Octavia RS.
2018 Skoda Karoq Engine and Specs
The base model of the Karoq will come with a 1.0 liter turbocharged 3 cylinder good for 115 horsepower. For those looking for more Skoda will also offer a 1.5 liter turbo-four with 150 horsepower. Unfortunately it seems these will be the only two petrol engines available at launch. A set of 2 diesels, a 1.6 and a 2.0 liter engine, will also be available. These will offer 115 or 150 horsepower.
All engines will come equipped with a 6 speed manual or a 7 speed DSG and front wheel drive. Only the more powerful engines will come with an optional all wheel drive system. The top end version of the car will receive a 2.0 liter diesel offering 190 horsepower. Unlike the others this will only come equipped with a 7 speed DSG and all wheel drive.
