Even though Tesla has been the first successful electric car manufacturer, they are not going to be the last. More and more manufacturers are always trying to join the ranks but not many succeed. In the past few years though there have been major breakthroughs in battery technology so manufacturers like Porsche or Jaguar are trying to come up with interesting electric cars. One of the latest is the 2018 Jaguar I-Pace, a car released back in November 2016. So far it is nothing more than just a concept but Jaguar actually says it is ready for production. The car is a brand new vehicle which has absolutely nothing in common with any of its siblings.
For this model Jaguar designed a bespoke platform which is actually a fully modular skate-like chassis. This houses the batteries inside the wheelbase of the car and it features two electric motors. The chassis is incredibly stiff and it is actually part of the car’s body. Instead of using steel, Jaguar went for an all aluminum construction.
This allows the car to be relatively light for what it is without sacrificing any rigidity. The production model is expected to hit the market in the early 2018. Unfortunately the price has yet to be released. Most rumors suggest a starting price close to $90,000 which is also where the equivalent Model X would be. While it is a rather large amount of money, we wouldn’t doubt Jaguar considering the 2018 Jaguar I-Pace looks considerably better than its main rivals.
Even though this may be just our opinion, pretty much everyone who saw the car in November thought it was absolutely stunning. Jaguar didn’t go for crazy falcon-wing doors or anything too unusual. Instead they created what it seems to be the coupe version of the F-Pace. The I-Pace sports the perfect proportions with a really aggressive, yet subtle design.
The front end is definitely that of the Jaguar crossover but the rear of the car seems a lot closer in design to the F-Type coupe. This mix of design notes makes for one of the most beautiful crossovers to be showcased to date and that is not an easy feat. Thanks to the fact it is more than 4 inches lower than the F-Pace and its incredibly slippery body, the 2018 Jaguar I-Pace features a 0.29 drag coefficient which is very good for this type of car.
Jaguar’s prowess can also be seen inside the cabin where the I-Pace looks finished. The car features a fully digital instrument cluster as well as a massive widescreen border-less touch-screen for the center stack.
It sports a very similar steering wheel to Jaguar’s other sports cars but the tall cabin makes for a slightly more vertical experience. Thanks to having a flat floor, the center stack seems to be floating in mid air while in between it and the floor there are numerous storage spaces.
So far Jaguar showcased a single engine option for the I-Pace. The car will feature two electric motors that will offer a combined output of 395 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.
This is actually less than the Model X.However, thanks to a really advanced cooling system, Jaguar said that they can extract a lot more power from their batteries without overheating.
This also means that, despite having less power, the car might be faster than some its rivals.
Jaguar said that the 0 to 60 MPH time is 4 seconds while the car will be able to offer a range in excess of 220 miles.This is quite impressive, especially since the battery pack is considerably lighter than what is currently available.
