At this point Ford doesn’t have a competitor for the compact truck market, so after GM released the new Colorado and Canyon, they basically took away more than 50% of the sales just with these two models. With their new trucks, GM also proved Ford that large compact trucks do not take away from the success of their larger models which was Ford’s largest concern. After this has been proven wrong, there have been many rumors about a 2018 Ford Ranger coming to the US market. A couple of months ago even Ford hinted at the possibility of it but no confirmations, up until a couple of weeks ago.

Trump heavily criticized Ford for moving the production of the C-Max and Focus to Mexico back in 2015. In order to defend themselves, a UAW spokesperson said, in Ford’s name, that jobs will not be lost in the Michigan plant because they will build there the Ranger and the Bronco.
This basically confirmed that Ford will built the truck not just for the International market but also for the US. So far the release date is unknown but rumors say the truck is mostly complete and it should enter final testing in a couple of months.

2018 Ford Ranger Design
The original truck looked a lot like a downsized version of the F-150 but this is no longer the case with the ongoing model. The upcoming 2018 Ford Ranger on the other hand might change.
From the looks of it, Ford will modify the US model in order to bring its design more in line with their other products. This means that the truck will likely get a more muscular design and a front end that could be slightly more similar to what the F-150 has to offer.
On top of that, expect a lot more packages for it such as a Sport version or even an FX4. In any case, the Ranger will look completely different than what is currently available.
Inside the cabin
Here things might not be as drastic as on the exterior. The Ranger will be revised for both the European market as well as for the US with the 2018 Ford Ranger version.
While the exterior will be all new for the latter, the interior will more than likely be pretty close. Here we expect a major improvement in terms of materials and quality control.
On top of that, considering that the Ranger already offers one of the larger cabins in its class, it should allow Ford to easily outmatch its rivals.
Under the hood New Ford Ranger 2018
Because the US market has completely different needs, the 2018 Ranger will likely get new engines. So far it seems that just one engine might be carried over from the International model.
This would be Ford’s 3.2 liter inline 5 turbocharged diesel. The engine is also used in the US Transit and it would allow them to easily use it on the Ranger without having to pass any emissions tests again.
For this application the engine will more than likely be tuned to offer more power and torque than the Transit. The base model on the other hand is expected to get on a different route than the competition. Why? Well, it is expected to use a small turbocharged 2 or 2.3 liter engine.
This would provide around 250 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque which is considerably more than the competition. On top of that, a future Sport model might get to use a turbocharged or naturally aspirated V6 offering north of 300 horsepower.
