Rumors about a new Fiat SUV have been floating around for years but only recently these started to seem true because not too long ago a car has been spied testing and it seems that this car is a future Fiat model. This is similar in size to a BMW X3 and it is supposedly built on their small platform which has been around in one form or another since 2005. While we may think that this wouldn’t allow them for a really large car, if we take a look at the all new Toro pickup then it becomes clear that this is not true. The 2018 Fiat C-SUV, which is most likely going to receive an all new name that will not be the 500XL.
The car will not be available in the US market and this may come as a shock at first but the US market currently doesn’t really need such a vehicle. Instead, the European market as well as most other Asian markets are definitely going to receive it.
2018 Fiat C-SUV Price
The price should hover around the equivalent of $25,000 for a base model which would be in the range of its competitors but unlike these the new crossover will likely be better equipped and it should also look a lot more modern as well.
Its small platform on which it is going to be built will mean that the interior space will be rather tight but then again, the 2018 Fiat C-SUV will still feature up to seven seats which should be more than enough for most people and at its entry price point which is quite low it shouldn’t really be a problem.
One of the only drawbacks of this platform is that the car will not really be able to do anything in off-road because it still is a rather basic chassis for a crossover. However, the car-like platform will mean that the C-SUV will handle better than its body-on-frame competitors and it will also offer more space inside the cabin because there is not going to be an intrusive chassis to take the available space.
Early design sketches point out at a similar design to the Toro and we have to agree that the C-SUV will most likely be nearly identical, at least in the front, to the Toro, especially after we have seen the shots of the camouflaged model spied a while ago. The more interesting part is that just a couple of days ago a Fiat insider said that a crossover version of the Toro is a real possibility which further makes us believe that the two will be very similar, inside and out.
Design of Fiat C-SUV
Being mostly a model designed for the European and Asian markets, the 2018 Fiat C-SUV will very likely come as standard, at least in Europe, with a 1.8 liter turbocharged inline 4 diesel engine which should provide between 110 and 130 horsepower and more than 200 lb-ft of torque.
Countries like China or even India are expected to receive a 1.4 liter turbocharged mill offering 138 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. The top of the range models are likely going to rock a 2 liter turbocharged diesel with up to 170 horsepower but some said that a 2.2 liter turbo-diesel, developed by Alfa Romeo for their cars, might be used at a later date.
This would be able to provide quite a bit more power and torque at the only expense of the price of the car which might easily hit $40,000 where there are better models than it. Front wheel drive is going to be standard and just like with the Toro, a 6 speed manual will be offered as standard. An automatic as well as an all wheel drive system are going to be offered as optional extras across the range.
