The 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser is probably the longest running SUV on the market today with the original model being released more than 50 years ago. The current generation of the car on the other hand was only released a few years ago but it quickly fell behind the competition due to the fact that it was a small facelift of an older model.
2016 Land Cruiser Review
Toyota is planning on fully upgrading the Land Cruiser to a more refined vehicle than it ever was. The 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser is still going to use a body on frame construction but this time the chassis will weigh 20% less thanks to the use of high strength steel while the body will also be lighter thanks to an aluminum hood, doors and hatch door.
However, these are not going to be the only changes Toyota is going to make to their Land Cruiser. In fact, it is supposed to received a new engine choice as well as a new interior which will offer more comfort with a lot more equipment in the base trim level.
Exterior of Toyota Land Cruiser 2016
On the exterior things are going to be kept quite conservative mostly due to Toyota’s desire of keeping the car as tough looking as possible. Because of this we expect the proportions of the car to be very close to those of the current generation but the front and rear ends are going to receive a big facelift.
A new front grille as well as a slimmer pair of headlights should be standard while the back will most likely see the return of the rear mounted spare tires and a new set of tail lights. All of these are going to make from the Land Cruiser a real city warrior that will be able to run through the desert or go to a dinner party.
Toyota Land Cruiser Interior
The interior of the 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser is going to be just as comfortable and luxurious as before. It will still feature three rows of seats with seating for up to 8 people and a plus over the previous generation are going to be the ventilated seats, both in the front and at the back.
The infotainment system is now going to receive wireless headphones for all the passengers while the navigation system is going to be accessible from any point in the car. Triple zone automatic climate control as well as an automatic parking system are going to be available on the base trim.
Engine of Land Cruiser 2016
Under the hood of the 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser we might see a surprise. While the current 5.7 liter V8 should be more than enough for most people’s needs with 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, it really isn’t the most fuel efficient engine in the industry. This might be replaced with a smaller turbocharged V6 unit but this is unlikely since Toyota clearly stated that the Land Cruiser won’t receive a V6.
The surprise might come in the form of a 5.7 liter V8 coupled to an electric motor and a set of batteries. This should increase the total available power to around 440 horsepower and it should increase the fuel efficiency of the car to at least 24 MPG on average which for a V8 powered monster is more than enough.
The gearbox should also be upgraded considering the new engine. This might be a new 6 speed automatic unit that will also offer manual shifting. Just like before, all wheel drive is going to be standard and so are going to be the two locking differentials which are a treat in off-road.
2016 Toyota Land Cruiser Release date and price
The release date has been announced to be in the late 2016 or early 2017 while the base price of the car won’t be much higher than the $80,000 of the current generation.
