The last model of the Dakota has been sold until the end of 2011 when it was discontinued because Fiat decided that it just didn’t make any sense. However, they made a deal and a new Dakota is on its way with a rumored release in the mid of 2016. Until then we might just see a concept for the car as well as a few more details about it.
2016 Dodge Dakota Review
However, from the early rumors it seems that the 2016 Dodge Dakota is going to be a truck based on the Mitsubishi L200 so it is likely to be a worthy competitor for the Tacoma or for the new compact Nissan pickup truck.
While there isn’t much information about it, it is safe to assume that the new Dakota will get a lot of inspiration in terms of design from its bigger brother, the Ram 1500. However, considering it is likely going to be based on the L200 the Dakota is going to be smaller than the previous version.
Engine of Dodge Dakota 2016
However, this should also mean that it will have smaller engines that will allow it to have a much better fuel consumption than the competition.
As far as the engines go, the Dakota will likely feature a selection of engines from both Dodge and also Fiat with a possible diesel unit coming from Mitsubishi. The base truck should come with a 2.4 liter inline 4 with around 177 horsepower and a 9 speed automatic which will power the rear wheels as standard.
A smaller 2 liter turbocharged engine from Fiat should also be available on the Dakota but this time with more than 260 horsepower. This will easily compete with the bigger V6 of the competition while offering a better fuel consumption. The diesel is likely to be a 2.2 liter inline 4 with as much as 180 horsepower and more than 340 lb-ft of torque giving the small Dakota a total tow rating of more than 10.000 pounds.
Dodge Dakota Interior and Exterior
Both the interior and the exterior of the 2016 Dodge Dakota are going to be designed from scratch with a few design notes coming from the Ram as well as from a few other Dodge vehicles. The dashboard is going to be clearly laid out while offering big controls in order to allow gloves operation while the general equipment level is going to be similar to that of a small Jeep crossover.
The exterior will have no real influence from Mitsubishi besides its size which is good news because it means that it will be a worthy competitor for the current trucks out there, offering a unique approach to the compact pickup truck.
Price for 2016 Dodge Dakota
The base price should be no higher than $16.000, meaning that it will be one of the most affordable pickup trucks on the market at the time of its release.
