City cars are some of the best selling cars in the World, especially now when cities are so congested. Back in 2010 Cadillac released a concept specifically aimed at city dwellers. Unfortunately since then they haven’t said much about it. Despite that not that long ago rumors about a new Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept started to float around the internet. It seems that these rumors are about the car released back in 2010 and about the possibility of it going into production. Not much else is known about it at this point but there are some interesting pieces of information available.
What is it?
The concept was a three-door hatchback specifically aimed at those wanting an easy to use city car. However, it was actually not meant for those looking for a cheap way of transport. The Urban Luxury was a Cadillac so it features quite a few interesting perks specifically aimed to make its passengers more comfortable.
The car was based on a bespoke chassis. If it will ever go into production then expect it to be based on a similar chassis to that of the Spark. The car will likely receive a wider track and possibly a lower body and that should be it. The end result would be a comfortable yet easy to drive car great for today’s congested cities.
Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept Design
Considering it has been released in 2010, the design of the Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept is not really a surprise. The car boasts the same corporate look found on older Cadillac cars. The rear on the other hand is mostly similar to the Spark but it also gets a few unique traits. For starters it gets vertical tail lights like those on the Escalade as well as a really vertical look which makes it seem shorter than it really is.
The car’s width allows it to offer a really spacious interior while the vertically-opening doors are there to ease the access inside. Unfortunately these doors would have increased the price of the car a bit too much. Because of that, if Cadillac actually plans a production model, do not expect the car to receive them if it will ever go into production.
The Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept boasts 4 individual seats which is quite impressive considering how small it is. This has been possible thanks to its width and relatively long wheelbase.
All these traits are expected on a future two-door Cadillac hatchback which would allow the company to grow even more. In fact they wouldn’t be the first luxury car manufacturer to offer a model like this. The concept had a minimalist-looking cabin and it seems this may also be the case with the rumored production car.
Under the hood
The concept boasted a 1.0 liter turbocharged 3 cylinder gas engine powering the front wheels via a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Even though it has been released in 2010, this system is still relevant to this date. On top of the small gas engine the car also had an electric motor. This was integrated into the gearbox and it was meant as an assist for the tiny gas engine when the turbocharger wasn’t offering full boost.
The car didn’t need to be recharged but it still had a battery in order to store energy from braking. The end result was as much as 56 MPG in the city and over 65 MPG on the highway which is still very impressive to this day. If the car will ever go into production then we have no doubt that an engine like this is still possible. In fact the Urban Luxury would likely provide considerably better fuel efficiency with the currently available technology.
