The second generation of the Touareg has been released back in 2010 and since then it didn’t really change much. The car shared its platform with both the Q7 and the Cayenne but it featured lesser engines as well as a shorter wheelbase. It seems that the upcoming 2019 Volkswagen Touareg, the car’s third generation, will be quite similar to its predecessor. For starters, the car is going to be based on the same MLB Evo chassis as the Q7. However, just like before the car will have a slightly shorter wheelbase but it will boast the same front and rear overhangs. Thanks to the extensive use of aluminum the new car should be both lighter and considerably stronger. It will also have a lower center of gravity which should aid the car with its driving characteristics.
Not that long ago the first spy shots of the upcoming Touareg have been taken and the results are quite interesting. For starters, the car won’t be identical to the Q5 like most of the early rumors suggested. Its design seems to be much closer to that of the Q7 and it seems quite a bit larger than the Q5.
On top of that it seems that its track is wider than that of the smaller Audi but more on that later. The price of the new 2019 Volkswagen Touareg hasn’t been revealed but it is safe to assume it will cost roughly the same as before. The car is expected to be unveiled in September but its production version won’t come until a few months later.
Volkswagen Touareg 2019 Design
As we said, the new Touareg has been spied a few times now and the changes are rather dramatic over the current model. While the current car looks a lot like a pumped-up Golf, the new one doesn’t really have much in common with the hatchback and that can only impress us. With this model VW tried to get a lot closer in design to Audi’s higher end offerings.
The wheel arches are considerably wider than on the previous model and on the car’s side there is a new design line that gives it a much sharper look. In the front it seems the new Touareg will take quite a bit from the Arteon instead of the Atlas like some suggested. Even though the camouflaged car looks identical to the Atlas, it has its grille partially covered.
We can clearly see the much taller grille, the slim headlights and the aggressive bumper intakes which all point out at the same front end as the T-Prime concept or the Arteon. In the back the car also seems to be mostly identical to the original concept with the big difference being the much bulkier profile.
Inside the cabin
Unfortunately VW didn’t release any pictures of the car’s interior. Despite that it is safe to assume the new 2019 Volkswagen Touareg won’t different much from their other offerings. For starters, expect the car to get the same long HVAC vent and the same type of materials as the Arteon. However, the dashboard’s design and curvature should be identical to those on the concept.
The wide center stack from the concept is also expected on the production car. However, the seats, VW’s digital instrument cluster and even the large 9.2 inch infotainment system are all going to be taken straight out of their other models. Unlike its sibling, the Touareg will only be available with 5 seats with a sliding second row which should give it an edge over its main rivals.
2019 Volkswagen Touareg Engine
It seems that a V6 might be the standard offering on the US market. However, this won’t be the older 3.6 liter VR6 but rather an Audi-developed 3.0 liter unit with anything between 290 and 350 horsepower. The European market on the other hand is set to receive a 2.0 liter turbocharged diesel as the base engine. With around 190 horsepower this should be more than enough to make the 2019 Volkswagen Touareg fast-enough for the European roads. A more powerful gas-powered engine with 280 horsepower is also expected to be offered. The top end model of the Touareg may receive a twin-turbo V6 with around 400 horsepower but this is nothing but a rumor at this point in time.
