The Taurus has been around for more than 3 decades at this point and it sold quite well for a good part of that. However, more recently the car started to lose ground against not only its rivals, but Ford own models. In fact because cars got larger, people could just get the Fusion and get just as much space as in the Taurus. The car’s total sales declined from north of 380,000 units a year back in 2000 all the way down to less than 50,000 in 2015. In comparison, Ford’s own Fusion sold more than 330,000 units in 2015 which is very impressive.

A discontinuation?

Many said that the Taurus will be discontinued from the US market and we tend to agree. This doesn’t mean that the name will disappear completely though. There is a Chinese-built Taurus based on the CD4 platform. On top of that, it seems that due to the low volume of sales, Ford may import that model at one point or another and release it on the US market as the 2019 Ford Taurus. This move would not only allow them to build other cars at the Chicago Assembly plant such as the rumored all-electric Model E.

If they decide to import the 2019 Ford Taurus from China then some modifications will have to be done. However, these modifications will only be needed due to the differences in regulations between the two countries. The Chinese-built Taurus is actually roomier inside than the current model.

It is around 7 inches shorter, slightly narrower and just as tall. However, it also features 4 extra inches to its wheelbase so there is plenty of room inside the cabin. It also gets different engines and a completely different packaging, so the car can use the available space without being so inefficient.

2019 Ford Taurus design

We would expect the new model of the Taurus to be mostly identical to the Chinese version. This borrows heavily from the Fusion but it also seems to bring some design notes from the Mustang and the Focus. Like we said, the car is quite large but Ford managed to do a better job at making it classy than with the Taurus. The swept-back headlights, large grille, subtle chrome inserts and long rear end make for a limousine-like appearance.

Inside the cabin

The overall layout of the Chinese Taurus is mostly identical to the new Lincoln Continental. This is to be expected though, especially since the two cars are mostly identical underneath as well. Because of that, it is safe to assume the 2019 Ford Taurus will at least get part of this design.

The wide center stack, the rotary gear selector, the digital instrument cluster and even the massive legroom for the rear seats should all be added to the 2019 model. Likely Ford will add a few unique touches in order to better fit the US market but the overall design is not expected to change much.

Under the hood

The Chinese model gets either a 2 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder or a larger 2.7 liter twin-turbo V6. It is safe to assume the 2019 US version of the car will be quite close to those specs. By then we may see Ford’s upcoming 2 and 2.3 liter EcoBoost engines which could replace entirely the V6. The lower weight added with the extra power would make for a great overall package. Front wheel drive will remain the standard offering across the range but an optional all wheel drive system is more than likely. Also, this might be one of the first cars to receive Ford’s upcoming 9 speed automatic designed for front and AWD applications.
