Even though the Impreza has been extensively revised, the WRX and WRX STI have been left mostly unchanged. Subaru’s spokesperson said that this is because the Impreza and the WRX STI are two completely different cars with different development cycles. Considering the current WRX STI has been released a few years ago, it seems that a replacement won’t be coming for at least a couple more years. Until then they revised the car with the 2018 Subaru WRX STI. This update comes with a few running gear upgrades, some interior changes and a slightly revised exterior.
Even though for an untrained eye the car may seem identical to the one before it, the new STI is a lot closer in design to the new Impreza. With the exterior revision, the new STI also gets new 19 inch wheels which are unique to the STI. Like we mentioned, the suspension system has also been updated quite a bit. For starters, the shocks are new, the springs have been tweaked and the overall unsprung weight decreased.
The end result should be a more neutral car that will respond quite a bit faster than before to sudden direction changes. With these upgrades the new STI also received larger Brembo brakes, both in the front and at the back. These sport larger calipers as well as thicker rotors, so they should be able to dissipate considerably more heat than before. The pricing hasn’t been revealed just yet but considering the upgrades we expect the 2018 Subaru WRX STI to be slightly more expensive than before.

Under the hood
The STI features the same 2.5 liter turbocharged EJ flat-four engine as before. This continues to make 305 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque which is no longer as impressive as it used to be. 10 years ago when the fastest Golf made close to 230 horsepower it was great. Now that the fastest Golf makes in excess of 300 horsepower, the STI doesn’t seem all that impressive. The best part about it will remain the transmission. The standard 6 speed manual is as good as it gets.
This sends the power to all four wheels. However, this time around the STI gets a new center differential which is electronically controlled. Subaru said that this will improve the reaction time of the AWD system and it should make the car more manageable. The clutch has also been revised slightly so Subaru now says that the STI should be considerably easier to drive. Despite all of these changes, the new STI will likely not be able to outrun its rivals which are all becoming faster every year.
2018 Subaru WRX STI design
Even though the changes have been kept to a minimum, there is no denial about the fact the 2018 Subaru WRX STI looks great. Unlike most of its rivals, which are all hatchbacks, the STI offers the grunt and muscular look it always had.
The front end is now even more aggressive with a new grille and new headlights. The bumper also changed slightly so it is as impressive as ever. All the extra air intake area is meant to better cool and give the engine considerably more air than before.
Inside the cabin
Here Subaru tried to make the STI as comfortable and as easy to use as possible. The car gets a larger 7 inch standard infotainment screen, Subaru’s EyeSight safety system as standard as well as a vehicle hold system which will hold the car on an incline or at a stoplight.
Besides that, it still gets the same Recaro seats as before and everything else remains unchanged. The overall quality inside the cabin is average at best, so the STI needs an upgrade to remain competitive.
