The Octavia is usually considered the value for money alternative to the VW Golf. It shares the same MQB platform as the German counterpart and usually the same engines as well. However, the Octavia is only available as a sedan or wagon and it usually gets a different tuning for the suspension as well. Even though the car was supposed to be the cheaper version of the Golf, it usually offered more features at roughly the same price point. This is exactly the case with its hot version, the 2018 Skoda Octavia RS 245 Combi. The RS boasts more power than the Golf GTI, more features and it is just as expensive as it. On top of that it offers considerably more space and together with its long running heritage, it might be a choice worth looking at.
Skoda Octavia RS 245 Combi In detail
Over the previous version the new RS 245 boasts a lot of improvements. Some of the largest changes have been made to its running gear. The car is now 14mm lower than the regular Octavia. On top of that it boasts a 38mm wider rear track which should help it with high speed stability as well as cornering balance.
The optional dynamic chassis control will give the RS a few drive modes to choose from which will control the car’s shocks in order to fit the current driving conditions. The price is set to increase slightly but the car is still going to be very similarly priced to the Golf GTI.
Even though it might seem identical to its predecessor at a first glance, the new 2018 Skoda Octavia RS 245 Combi did get some questionable upgrades. The front end received the most amount of attention from the press. This is because the new Octavia received a four-headlights design which is not in use anymore.
The high beams have been integrated into the grille so the car now looks a bit more menacing. A new front bumper as well as a new grille boasting black vertical slats have been installed. The RS 245 also received a new dual rear exhaust with rectangular tail-pipes. As standard it gets 19 inch black diamond-cut wheels which are unique to the RS.
2018 Skoda Octavia RS 245 Combi Interior
There haven’t been many changes over the base model here. The seats have been improved to standard sport seats with great side bolsters. As an option buyers will be able to get faux-leather Recaro seats. All the interior inserts have been replaced with real aluminum. The 8 inch standard infotainment system can be replaced with a much larger 9.2 inch screen which also boasts a more responsive interface.
Under the hood
The 2018 Skoda Octavia RS 245 Combi features a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine. This is an evolution of the one found on the previous model and it is very similar to the one in the GTI. The engine can now provide up to 245 horsepower and 370Nm of torque. This is 15 horsepower and 20Nm more than the one before it. Instead of the older 6 speed DSG gearbox, the new RS can be had with VW’s DQ380 gearbox which is a 7 speed transmission that still uses wet clutches.
However, as standard the car will come equipped with a 6 speed manual and an electronic differential which will brake the inside wheel. The performance package will add a mechanical limited slip differential which should improve the way it handles considerably. When equipped with the manual the RS will hit 60 MPH in just 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 153 MPH. The automatic will lower the acceleration time even more but Skoda didn’t release the official figures for it just yet.
