Nissan dared to depart from the usual crossover and came up with something quite special. The Murano is one of, if not, the best looking crossovers currently on sale. In order to maximize interior space, the car is actually based on a sedan’s chassis which is usually the case these days. The interior is comfortable and nicely laid out, the materials are good and the design is amazing. The car is not perfect though. Despite looking like one of the sportiest crossovers around, it really isn’t. The suspension system is usually lacking and despite being comfortable, it can’t really hold its own through corners. On top of that the engine is one of the least powerful around which is not really ideal. Nissan did release a 2017.5 update a while back but that car didn’t come with many upgrades. It seems though that a new one might be added soon with the 2018 Nissan Murano.

This is actually expected to be the mid-life facelift of the car. Even though it still looks great, the new Murano might receive an exterior overhaul, some upgrades inside the cabin and possibly a new powertrain.

We also hope that the car’s suspension system will be thoroughly upgraded in order to cope with the added power and torque from the new engine. The end result should be an even more striking Murano to look at without its usual disadvantages. The price should still hover around $30,500 for a base model with the top end versions going well past $40,000.

The design

The Murano was one of the cars that set the trend for all the other Nissan models. However, this is not the case anymore. It seems Nissan wants to be taken more seriously so they recently updated the Pathfinder with a new look.

This look is also expected on the 2018 Nissan Murano to a certain extent. The highly aggressive V-shaped grille as well as the car’s unusual headlights might be gone. While we do love the design, we also understand Nissan wants to appeal to a broader market. Because of that we may see a similar grille to that on the Pathfinder as well as slightly more conventional-looking headlights without the vertical elongations.

Even though this may not sound exciting, we are quite sure the end result is going to surprise a lot of people. In order to go along with the new front end, the Murano could also receive new wheels, colors and tail lights as well as a redesigned rear bumper.

Inside the cabin

The ongoing generation of the Murano actually received the prize for the best cabin in its class. This is unfortunately no longer the case and we doubt things will change much. The 2018 Nissan Murano is expected to retain the same dashboard as before.

However, it should also receive a better infotainment system also supporting Android Auto and it may also get slightly better materials in the lower part of the cabin. The four-spoke steering wheel is also more than likely going to be replaced by Nissan’s newly designed three-spoke wheel which would be a major improvement.

Under the hood

Unfortunately Nissan ditched the hybrid a while back so the Murano is currently available only with a 3.5 liter naturally aspirated V6. This engine makes 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque which is barely average for a car weighing around 4,000 pounds.

The good part about it, unusually, has been the CVT gearbox which managed to keep the engine at the optimum RPM, so the Murano was also one of the faster cars in its class. Things won’t change much for the 2018 Nissan Murano. While we would love to see a new V6-based hybrid, the car will more than likely stick with a 3.5 liter V6.

This time around though the V6 will likely be the same as the one on the Maxima. Here the DOHC 3.5 liter V6 manages to provide 300 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque without direct injection. If Nissan decided to update it with direct injection we may see a Murano with over 300 horsepower which would definitely be impressive. The CVT is here to stay but with the help of the extra oomph, it should be more than capable of achieving 60 MPH in less than 7 seconds.
