Mercedes’ last true hyper-car was the SLR which was built in cooperation with McLaren. They also built the CLK GTR back in the late ‘90s for homologation reasons. Since then though they didn’t really had a hyper-car. Both the SLS and the AMG GT were more like sports or super-cars but none of them was really capable to compete with cars like the LaFerrari or the Porsche 918. It seems that in order to compete with these cars, a new model will be released at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show. The 2018 Mercedes-AMG Project One was nothing but a rumor up until AMG went ahead and released actual information about it.

More details

So far they released a few pictures which show the car’s profile and its rear end. Even though these are quite vague, they give us a good idea about how the finished car might look like. On top of the design, they also showcased some interesting technical data. For starters, it seems that this may be a true Formula 1 car for the streets.

It will use Formula 1 technology in an unaltered form which was never done before. The price is still unknown but considering the technology that will go into it, we would not be surprised if the car will cost in excess of $2 million. This would make it one of the most expensive cars Mercedes or AMG made to date. Even though it is expected to be released by the end of the year, deliveries will only start in the mid of 2018.

The design

A return to their roots might be possible with the 2018 Mercedes-AMG Project One. From the sketches they released so far, the Project One seems to feature a very similar profile to that of the original CLK GTR. On top of that, the rear of the car seems to be taken straight out of a Le Mans racer.

There is no back window. Instead it features two NACA-ducts and central air intake on top of the cabin. Interestingly enough there is no massive rear wing which means that the car is more than likely using active aerodynamics. There is no word about the interior at this point. Mercedes did say that the car will be long, wide and it will feature only two seats in a really short cabin.

The engine – a true race-car?

They already announced that the 2018 Mercedes-AMG Project One will feature a Formula 1 engine. They haven’t said anything about the fact it will be a modified unit. However, in order to meet sound, reliability and fuel consumption regulations, the engine will more than likely be altered in one way or another.

We expect the car to boast a 1.6 liter turbocharged V6 gas engine which will be mated to an electric motor. The car will feature a KERS regenerative system that will feed the electric motor when the gas engine doesn’t have enough torque or the massive turbo is spooling-up. AMG announced that the car will make a combined output of 1,000 horsepower which is actually more than the Formula 1 powertrain.

In order to be able to put out these numbers the tiny V6 engine will have to rev quite high. In fact it seems it will rev way past 10,000 rpm which is considerably more than its rivals. Also, to top it all off, the car will come as standard with all wheel drive.

Thanks to the rather low weight and massively powerful engine, it should be more than capable to hit 60 MPH in less than 2.5 seconds while having a top speed in excess of 200 MPH. Our only concern with the 1.6 liter engine would be the reliability, especially since it would be a first for a production car.
