The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar has just been released and it is quite different from what the early rumors suggested. This is Land Rover’s first car to use a Jaguar-designed platform. That’s right, the Velar is based on the same chassis as the F-Pace. This is actually good news because it means it will also be one of their few models to be great to drive at high speed. On top of that the aluminum chassis means the Velar is rather light for how big it is. It also allows Range Rover to use Jaguar’s expertise on driving characteristics, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone if the Velar ends up as the best to drive Land Rover ever made.
The car’s price hasn’t been revealed so far but it is expected to start at right around $50,000. This would put it right between the Evoque and the larger Range Rover Sport. It also gives them plenty of room to work if they ever want to release a high performance version of the Velar.
Even though the car is using the same chassis as the F-Pace and it shares its wheelbase with the Jaguar, it is actually longer by nearly 4 inches. It also sports an extra 4 inches to its width but it actually is shorter in height. The end result has to be one of the most aggressively looking cars in its class which is not an easy feat. This is especially impressive since it comes from Land Rover which are not known for making these types of cars.
2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar exterior
The design cues are clearly taken from the Sport as well as the regular Range Rover. However, the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar does bring a few unique traits to the mix. For starters it features new heat extractors on the hood, the side vents are longer and both of them are color coded with the front air intakes.
There is a larger splitter, the front end is slightly more angled and the curved headlights make for a really stunning look. The back is quite similar to that of the Jaguar but Land Rover added a larger roof spoiler and a slightly more aggressive bumper.
Inside the cabin
Things are even more impressive here. The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar is actually one of the only cars to go with a fully digital set of instruments for the cabin. There are two large high resolution LCD screens on the dashboard.
The upper screen offers information about the navigation and infotainment systems. The lower screen on the other hand handles all the other systems on the car such as the heating, ventilation and even tire pressures. This is controlled via touch-sensitive buttons which only light up when touched, so when the Velar’s screens are not touched for a while, it will offer a really serene driving experience.
2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Engine
There is no surprise about the fact the car boasts all of Land Rover’s well known engines. In the US it will come with a 2 liter turbo-four with 247 horsepower, a 380 horsepower supercharged 3 liter V6 or a 2 liter turbo-diesel with 180 horsepower. The European model will add a 240 horsepower diesel as well as a larger 3 liter turbo-V6 diesel with up to 300 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. All engines will come mated to a ZF 8 speed gearbox with both the V6 diesel and its gas counterpart receiving a heavier duty transmission. A standard all wheel drive system is going to remain standard across the range. Unlike some of its rivals, the Velar will offer Land Rover’s great all terrain response system which so far has proved to be one of the best on the market.
