The XF is one of Jaguar’s better selling models despite market’s tendency to favor crossovers. It has been heavily revised back in 2015 despite the fact it still looks mostly the same as before. However, Jaguar didn’t release with the new model its wagon version. Even though some lost hope for a new one, it seems that there is going to be a 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake. The car has been spied testing ever since the late 2016 and it looks quite impressive at a first look. It is quite clear that it shares the same front end with the regular XF which was also the case with the older generation.
The older model was only available in Europe and despite being good, it didn’t sell all that great. One of the main problems with it was the design but more on that later. This time around the new Sportbrake will also be sold on the US market.
Jaguar’s CEO confirmed this a while ago which is great news, especially since the US market loves wagons. The car is set to arrive in the second half of 2017 and its price shouldn’t be far off the original. Expect a starting point of around $50,000 which is in the neighborhood of its rivals.
2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake design
We did say the major problem with the older model was its looks. Well, the car looked a bit too much like a hearse. However, the 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake seems to be nothing like that. For starters, despite looking identical to the older model at first, it is quite clear that the rear end is heavily camouflaged. It seems that Jaguar added a fake profile in order to keep people guessing.
Despite that it is clear that the rear window is heavily raked and from the position of the antenna, it is safe to assume that it will look a lot more like a shooting brake than anything else. Early renders point out at a design similar to that of the Porsche Panamera ST which is quite interesting. This might mean that Jaguar is targeting a completely different market than with the older model which should hopefully mean the car will be successful.
Inside the cabin
Here we expect the Sportbrake XF to be mostly identical to its sedan counterpart. From the spy shots it seems the car is still based on the short wheelbase sedan, so it should have mostly the same amount of legroom. The difference will come with the available headroom for the rear seats. Also, its trunk is going to be massive, especially since it has longer rear overhangs than the sedan.
Under the hood
Despite being a wagon, the 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake is expected to come only with the higher end engines. A base 3 liter supercharged V6 should be standard. This currently makes 340 or 380 horsepower and up to 332 lb-ft of torque.
An eight speed automatic and rear wheel drive are also going to be found on the base model. These should make it quite fun to drive while not compromising its fuel efficiency. With the Sportbrake there have been some rumors about a more powerful engine which would eventually be seen in the sedan as well. This engine would be taken straight out of the F-Type SVR.
It is a 5 liter supercharged V8 petrol engine which is currently good for 575 horsepower and well over 500 lb-ft of torque. This would give the wagon super-car status and it should make it one of the coolest cars around. Rear wheel drive will likely be standard across the range while an optional all wheel drive system should be available at least on the V6-equipped models.
