After many reviews said that the Camaro is the better muscle car on the market, Ford decided to release the brand new Mustang a lot faster than some of us thought. The 2018 Ford Mustang has been revealed back at the North American International Auto Show and it is a lot more impressive than we first thought. Ford gave the car a new look, the revised the powertrain as well as the running gear. The end result should be a faster, more efficient and better looking car than before. The chassis is mostly the same as before and so far it seems that Ford will offer the same trim levels as before.
While the car has been released, it is not currently available for sale. Also, Ford didn’t reveal much information on its engines. This likely means that Ford is still trying to figure the best engine combinations for the car. The price will likely increase slightly. The current car is more than $1,000 less than the Camaro so Ford has some wiggle room to make the base Mustang better.
The higher end models such as the GT350 and its R counterpart should cost roughly the same as before. Even though they haven’t announced this, with the 2018 Ford Mustang we should also see a Mach 1 trim level as well as a GT500. These two will likely be revealed at a later date closer to the car’s availability in showrooms.
2018 Ford Mustang Design
The exterior look of the new Mustang has to be the biggest change over the older model. At a first glance the rear of the car is similar to the older model. However, the tail-lights now feature a rounder-appearance, the bumper sports a larger diffuser and the GT model gets a quad-exhaust system.
The rear spoiler is also considerably larger which should help with lateral grip which was average at best on the older model. The front fascia on the other hand is brand new. Ford dropped the height of the front end by a sizable difference to make it sleeker. The headlights are more angular and the bumper features new triangular intakes.
The end result is a more European-looking car that still manages to retain the DNA of a true muscle car. Inside the cabin the changes have been kept to a minimum. However, they will be offering Ford’s new automatic parking system which will let the owner prepay or book a parking space.
Ford Mustang 2018 Under the skin
The 2018 Ford Mustang GT is going to feature an optional MagneRide system, similar to that found on the GT350. This is a direct answer to Chevy’s Camaro SS which is considerably cheaper than Ford’s GT350. On top of that, the GT will get a quad-exhaust system with active flaps that will make it louder and possibly noisier.
Both the GT350 and the GT350R will get not only the usual six speed manual. Ford is also going to offer a new dual-clutch gearbox which will more than likely make them considerably faster than before. All of these will make the Mustang an overall faster, and easier to drive car. The engines will be the same as before with an exception. The V6 will be completely discontinued. Ford also announced that the 2.3 liter EcoBoost will offer more power but they haven’t disclosed how much exactly.
The 5 liter V8 will remain on the Mustang which is reassuring. This engine will come with direct and port fuel injection, similar to the Raptor. On top of that the compression will be raised to 12:1. These upgrades will allow for a higher output and lower fuel consumption. Both the EcoBoost and the GT will get a choice of a six speed manual or Ford’s brand new 10 speed automatic.
