Even though the current Mustang has been released not that long ago, Ford is already working on an update for the car. Rumors started ever since GM launched their new Camaro and Dodge announced that they plan on releasing a new Challenger in 2018. Well, the rumors have been replaced by facts. A few months ago the first camouflaged Mustang has been seen. On top of that, a few weeks back a Mustang wearing heavy camouflage has also been spied. This means that Ford will do more than just a few mild updates to the car.
For starters, the new 2018 Ford Mustang GT500 will keep its chassis mostly unchanged. However, everything else is expected to be all new. The car should receive a new suspension system which will likely provide the driver with more control over the car.
It is also expected to become slightly lighter and it should receive a few new engines and trim levels as well. Two of the most awaited ones are the S550 Mach 1 and the GT500. Both of these cars are expected to be launched by the end of 2017.
The Mach 1 will be slotted right between the GT and the GT350R while the GT500 will become the new top end Mustang. This should give Ford a bit more leverage when it comes to the pricing scheme and it should allow them to compete on a more direct way with GM and their Camaro.
Even though the 2018 Ford Mustang Mach 1 has been just a rumor, it seems that the car will actually be released. The first sightings of it have been reported a few months back and it seems that the car will combine the looks of the GT350 with a new engine.
From the test mule we can see a few things. The car offers a wider front track, the same front end as the GT350 as well as a slightly wider rear track as well.
On top of that it seems to use a unique exhaust system which is definitely louder than that of its sibling, the GT. So far the finished design is still under wraps but we may see it by the start of 2017.
The Mach 1 is actually expected to make use of a new engine. So development mule sounded quite rough and it was a lot louder than the GT. However, it didn’t seem to have a supercharger or turbocharger. This makes us think at a revised 5 liter naturally aspirated V8 which could provide north of 480 horsepower.
The 2018 Ford Mustang GT500
This is the car everyone has been talking about in the past year. The upcoming Shelby GT500 will become Ford’s new top end Mustang and it will also take the cake as the most expensive Mustang ever made.
The car is expected to debut in the late 2017 and it should outmatch all of its rivals. Not much is known about it at this point. However, it seems that it will use a very similar setup to the GT350R with a much more powerful engine.
While there have been many rumors, it seems that the GT500 will use a turbocharged V8 engine. This would be the first Mustang to use this type of powertrain. So far there is still little information about it. However, we have confirmation that it will be turbocharged.
We expect the car to provide well over 700 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque. With the official numbers still being unknown, expect the GT500 to trump most of its competitors. Both the GT500 and the Mach 1 will likely use, as standard, Ford’s new 10 speed automatic which was co-developed with GM.
