The Fusion looks, and feels, like a new car. Also, only a few months ago Ford updated the model with new engines and even newer technologies. This doesn’t mean though that it is a new car. The current model has been in fact released in 2012 and it has a lot in common with the older Mondeo. This doesn’t make it awfully competitive with models like the all new Malibu or the Mazda6. Because of that it seems that a redesigned might be released with the 2018 Ford Fusion. This new model would use a new platform, engines and it would also be the car to give Ford a new corporate design.
2018 Ford Fusion Design
However, while the car is more than likely going to be released in the early 2018, Ford didn’t release anything on it. We are not sure why but we do think that the changes will be quite dramatic and they will make for an incredible car for sure. Many said that the front wheel drive design would be abandoned. Why? Well, it would allow Ford to move the Fusion upmarket.
However, we are quite sure that they are not going to do that. Instead, a new modular front wheel drive platform should be used.
This should employ materials like aluminum, high strength steel and even composites in certain areas. The end result should be at least 50% more rigidity and also a lower weight. The size of the current model is just right so it makes to sense to change it for the 2018 Ford Fusion.
However, its general proportions will definitely be updated. Expect a slightly less bulky design and a more coupe-inspired look.
Ford Fusion Interior
All of its competitors managed to be quite good in terms of interior space without sacrificing looks and this should be the case with the upcoming Fusion. Some suggested that the car may take some of the Ford’s GT but this is unlikely.
Instead it should have a lot more in common with the future Fiesta. This will also be the case for its cabin. Like we mentioned above, even though it will have a lower, and likely raked, roof, the new Fusion should easily be just as comfortable as before. On top of that the design won’t be as bland.
Instead the car may take note from its German competitors and the end result might be outstanding. The quality of the materials and build quality should also improve by quite a bit over the ongoing generation which is lacking in this regard.
Engine of Ford Fusion 2018
The current Fusion is quite good in terms of powertrains and the upcoming 2018 Ford Fusion should make no difference. For this model Ford is definitely going to target fuel efficiency, so all engines should be turbocharged.
The base engine should become a 1.5 liter unit which might develop between 170 and 200 horsepower depending on the model of choice. The 2 liter turbocharged mill might make a return as well. However, this time it should offer closer to 270 horsepower.
Both of these will get more efficient as well as smoother. A manual is unlikely for this models while the older six speed automatic should finally be replaced by Ford’s newer 9 speed unit. It is worth mentioning that all wheel drive could become available across the range which would be a big win for Ford.
The top end models should receive the current 2.7 liter twin-turbocharged V6. The power might be the same but the fuel efficiency could get better with reworked internals. The Sport version may even receive a manual gearbox. A higher performance RS version could get as much as 400 horsepower but not much has been said about it.
