The Ferrari 488 is the benchmark in its class both in terms of performance and driving characteristics. However, due to the fact its rivals are always being improved, it will have to evolve in order to stay on top. It seems that a new model is already in the works with the 2018 Ferrari 488 Special Edition. The car will come as an improved 488GTB with more power and a better running gear. It is also expected to be noticeably lighter than the base car and it will more than likely boast a different aerodynamic profile. All of these changes should allow the 488 SE to trump its competitors, at least until a new model will be released by Ferrari in the upcoming years.
The high performance 488 is going to be based on the same platform as the usual car. This means a spaceframe aluminum chassis wrapped in carbon fiber or aluminum panels.
In this case most of the car’s exterior will be made out of carbon fiber in order to save as much weight as possible. In fact it seems that it might weigh with up to 100 pounds less than the 488 which would be quite impressive. The price is still unknown but it is expected to cost more than $100,000 over the price of a regular 488GTB.
2018 Ferrari 488 Special Edition design
Like its predecessor, the 2018 Ferrari 488 Special Edition will come with a different body kit. Both the front and rear bumpers will be completely changed. In the front it will likely receive a larger adjustable splitter while in the back a larger diffuser will definitely be installed.
This could also include the exhausts in order to create a blown-diffuser, a feature first used in F1. This would give the special 488 improved downforce without increasing the drag. As standard the car will likely come with 20 inch rims wrapped in high performance track tires while a fixed rear wing could be offered. Even though this would decrease the top speed, it would give it a much higher cornering speed than otherwise.
Inside the cabin
Here the electric seats, heavy aluminum inserts or even some of the usual equipment are going to be removed. The 2018 Ferrari 488 Special Edition is expected to boast considerably lighter carbon fiber seats, carbon fiber inserts throughout the cabin as well as a minimal set of features. The upholstery will likely be made out of Alcantara but they might also offer a leather version for those really wanting it.
The engine and running gear
Two of the most important aspects of the Special Edition 488. The running gear will likely receive a different setup for the shocks and springs. The car might also receive larger carbon ceramic disc brakes, more similar to those on the LaFerrari.
The powertrain will still consist out of the same 3.9 liter twin-turbo V8 and 7 speed dual-clutch automatic. However, things won’t be left untouched. In fact the engine is expected to offer with at least 35 horsepower more than the usual car. Thanks to the fact it is turbocharged, the engine could easily provide north of 700 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. Considering its latest competitor, some even suggested the new 488 will provide around 720 horsepower in order to match its rival. The gearbox will also receive a different software in order to make better use of the extra power. Also, the rear differential will likely receive a different torque vectoring setup. This should allow the 488 SE to corner at higher speeds without losing traction. The top speed might decrease slightly but the 0 to 60 MPH time will definitely be under 3 seconds which would make it one of the fastest Ferrari ever made.
