The Journey is a rather odd car in Dodge’s current roster. It is nearly as large as the Cherokee. However, it is based on Chrysler’s old JC platform and on top of that it comes with rather old engines. The interior is dated, it drives worse than most of its rivals and there isn’t enough room inside despite its exterior. It is also quite expensive with some models going for well over $35,000. Dodge said a while back that they are looking to replace the Journey but time passed and nothing really changed. However, it seems that things might be delayed until the 2018 Dodge Journey will be released.
So far there is very little information about the successor of the car. Some suggested it could use a front wheel drive platform, similar to that on the Pacifica minivan. Luckily though this isn’t exactly true. In fact inside sources confirmed that the successor for the Journey will use Alfa’s platform.
The Giorgio rear wheel drive architecture is going to be a perfect match for the Journey. We all know Dodge is currently FCA’s sports brand in the US, so it would make a lot of sense for them. The rear wheel drive chassis, low weight and great dynamic characteristics would assure the Journey will be successful. The price is still unknown but if this will happen then expect a starting price north of $30,000.
2018 Dodge Journey design
Many suggested the 2018 Dodge Journey will be just a rebadged Stelvio. However, this is likely not going to be true. The Stelvio is a five seats crossover built with performance in mind.
Even though the new model might be made in Italy by Alfa Romeo or Fiat, it won’t have much in common in terms of looks with the Alfa. We expect the car to get a bulkier look, similar to what the Durango has. On top of that, it will likely be slightly larger than the Stelvio in order to be able to accommodate up to three rows of seats.
The interior of Dodge Journey 2018
So far it seems Dodge is looking to restart themselves as a brand and this will take some work. Because of that expect the upcoming Journey to look like nothing else in their roster.
We hope Dodge will offer a sporty-feeling three rows crossover with considerably more space than before. On top of that, due to the larger price tag we really hope they will manage to install much better materials inside. If this will be done then there will be no reason for the 2018 Dodge Journey to fail.
Under the hood
Thanks to the fact the car will get rid of its dated platform, new engines are going to become available. The base model of the Journey will likely get to use a 2 liter turbo-four with 197 horsepower. A higher end version with as much as 276 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque is also a real possibility. A diesel is still unlikely. However, things could change, especially since the US market seems to be open to the idea of having a diesel as your main car. If this will happen then the Journey might use a 2.2 liter diesel with 207 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque which would easily make it one of the better offerings around. Both engines are more than likely going to come with rear wheel drive as standard and an 8 speed automatic. All wheel drive should be offered as an optional extra for the higher power engines. Some also suggested a high performance SRT model. This might get to use a 3 liter twin-turbo V6 but so far there hasn’t been released any reliable information about this particular model.
