The original Avalanche was a very interesting product. It combined the body of a large body on frame SUV with a small bed. The car was intended to be used mostly as an SUV with the added capabilities of a pickup. Unfortunately though, the design was not as successful as GM hoped and it was discontinued after roughly 10 years. Well, it now seems that a new model might use the same name but this time around it might be a bit more different than what most people thought. For starters, the rumors 2018 Chevy Avalanche is expected to be smaller and more efficient than its predecessor.
This doesn’t mean it will not offer all the capabilities of the original though. It is expected to offer just as much room inside as well as roughly the same amount of power. Just like before, the Avalanche is still expected to use a body on frame construction.
However, it will likely make use of aluminum, high strength steel and composites in order to get the weight down. The chassis will still be shared with the Silverado but the new model is expected to use an independent suspension at the back as well as an all new design for its floor pan.
This should allow GM to get the floor lower to the ground, increase the space inside the cabin without compromising the towing capability of the truck. The price might still hover around $40,000 which would put it a class above its closest competitor, the Honda Ridgeline.
2018 Chevy Avalanche design
This time around the 2018 Chevy Avalanche is expected to go on a different route than its truck and full size SUVs counterparts. GM might give it a unique appearance, most likely closer in design to that of the Colorado.
This would allow it to fit a class of its own without having to always be compared to the more expensive models. The front will likely be more aerodynamic and a bit more stylized than that of the larger trucks while the back will still get a small pickup bed.
This will offer enough space for most with the added possibility of extending it via a mid-mounted hatch which would use half the cabin space for the bed. This has been used before and it should make wonders with the new type of chassis.
Unlikely most other trucks, the 2018 Chevy Avalanche should offer a much larger cabin. This will likely be similar to that of the larger Tahoe without the added bulk.
Expect five people to fit in perfectly without having to make any compromises. So far it seems that the new Avalanche might also get more luxurious models than its close siblings which would give GM an edge over its rivals.
Under the hood
In order to be competitive, the new Avalanche will have to be fuel efficient. So far it seems that they might not go for the usual V8 engines previously found in these trucks.
Instead, GM might opt for something new. So far they have under development V6 and V8 turbocharged engines which might provide anything between 300 and 500 horsepower and more than 400 lb-ft of torque.
The Avalanche will most likely benefit from a small turbocharged V6 which will offer improved fuel efficiency as well as better performance than its closest rivals. This engine will likely drive either the rear or all wheels via a 10 speed automatic. It still is unclear what the actual performance of the truck will be.
So far it seems that it will be able to tow well over 5,000 pounds, the rating found on most of its competing trucks.
