The Tahoe is a body-on-frame SUV which manages to retain all the characteristics of a true workhorse. It can tow a rather impressive weight and it can still perform on and off the road. However, up to this point the Tahoe wasn’t really regarded as a performance vehicle. It seems that GM wants to change that, especially since they just released the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe RST. The latter stands for Rally Sport Truck and it is meant to be more than just a mild facelift for the truck. The package adds a few performance parts making the Tahoe a really impressive choice.
The chassis of the car didn’t change at all for the 2018 model year. While the RST package just brings a few exterior and interior upgrades, it can be had with an optional sports package as well as with a couple of unique features. For starters, if the buyer gets the RST package he will also be able to get the optional Performance Package. This will add 6 piston Brembo brake calipers, larger rotors and better brake pads for the front axle.
On top of that a new Borla exhaust system will be used together with a new set of 22 inch rims wrapped in high performance on-road tires. However, the biggest upgrade has to be the magnetic-ride suspension system. This will allow the driver to control how the car behaves, so it will make the RST one of the best driving body-on-frame SUVs. This should easily allow GM to get ahead of the competition.
The most notable change on the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe RST is definitely the way it looks. For this model GM went all out and decided to ditch the chrome which is always a good move. Instead, the grille, headlight surrounds, the front and rear bumper as well as the door handles have all been color coded.
The badge, mirrors, usual chrome accents on the windows or even the grilles have been blacked out so the end result is a much stealthier-looking car. The new exhaust brings a new rear muffler with twin-tips which definitely makes the RST Tahoe stand out.
2018 Chevrolet Tahoe RST Interior
Unfortunately they didn’t say much about the car’s interior. This likely means that the RST Tahoe is mostly the same as the regular version.
Chevrolet said a while ago that the car is just as comfortable and as quiet inside the cabin as the best Tahoe in the range. We do hope they will add slightly more supportive seats and at least the option to get an all-suede upholstery which would really elevate the car’s interior.
Under the hood
So far the Tahoe has been available with a 5.3 liter naturally aspirated V8. However, for the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe RST they also added the option of a larger 6.2 liter engine. This naturally aspirated V8 is the same as the one used in the Silverado. This means it makes a rather impressive 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. This time around the engine has been mated to GM’s 10 speed automatic, so it should get the Tahoe to 60 MPH in as little as 5.7 seconds.
On top of that it will allow it to tow up to 8,400 pounds which is considerably better than the competition. Like with most other cars in this class, rear wheel drive is standard while an all wheel drive system can be had as an option. The latter offers slightly worse acceleration and fuel consumption but better grip during all-weather driving. With the 6.2 liter engine the RST will come as standard with the usually optional Brembo brakes, so the driver will enjoy having a lot more control over the car.
