The Equinox has never been the best crossover in its class mostly because even when it was released, the previous version was rather dated. However, this is no longer true for the brand new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. This is a brand new car based on a new platform featuring Chevrolet’s newest corporate look. The new Equinox is also more efficient, faster and smaller than before which is unusual. This is because Chevrolet will release a large seven seats crossover later down the road and the new Equinox doesn’t have to be closer to that car.
Instead, it will have to directly compete with Mazda’s CX-5 and the new CR-V which are two of the best crossovers currently on the market. In order to compete with them, the new Equinox is now using a brand new platform with the D2XX which also underpins the Envision.
Chevrolet Equinox In detail
Because of the new platform, the car is now nearly 20cm shorter and it has a 10cm shorter wheelbase. It is however just as wide and as tall as the previous model so the cabin is roughly the same size. This means that the Equinox has considerably more room than some of its rivals while not having to compromise on anything. The trunk is also one of the largest in its class and Chevrolet did some interesting changes to the layout of the seats to make everything better.
The car will become available for sale soon enough at a rather large price tag. The new car now starts at $27,000 which is $3,000 more than what the previous model used to cost. This change is because Chevrolet wants to offer a better overall experience so the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox has to be more expensive. Cheaper versions might come later down the road but until then, the base model will be $3,000 more expensive than before.
Chevrolet departed from the boxy and unappealing look of the older model for something a lot more modern. In the front we can see clear influences from their latest cars such as the Camaro or the Malibu. It features a large two-piece grille with the lower section being a large air intake for the radiator. The bumper features a smaller intake which is flanked by two large fog-lamps.
The headlights are nearly identical to those on the Malibu featuring a narrow and angled look which makes it seem a lot more aggressive than before. The swooping lines continue on the sides of the car and end up with a rear end that is now a lot classier than before. Even if the car is definitely an evolution of the older model, it still looks fresh which is what matters in this class.
Inside the cabin
The larger price tag of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox makes perfect sense inside. Here Chevrolet did their best in order to create a great interior and they did it.
The dashboard has a minimalist design and features a standard 7 inch infotainment screen. The instrument cluster still uses analogue dials but it does feature a large information screen. The five seats are nicely spaced apart and feature great lumbar and side support.
Also, the materials are definitely above the average of its class which is where most of the extra cost went. There are no hard plastics in sight which is a great achievement for this price point.
Under the hood
Instead of offering an anemic naturally aspirated inline 4 or a potent, but thirsty, V6, Chevrolet decided to offer three turbocharged engines on the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. The base car gets a 1.5 liter turbocharged inline 4 with 170 horsepower.
This manages to offer 31 MPG on the highway which is quite impressive. The V6 has been replaced by a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4, similar to that in the Camaro. Here it makes 252 horsepower and manages to offer most of the torque at just 1,500 rpm. This engine will be able to tow up to 3,500 pounds which is just as much as before.
The big news come in the form of the 1.6 liter turbocharged diesel with 136 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. This engine will do more than 40 MPG on the highway and it is the real star here. A nine speed automatic is going to be offered as standard on the gas engines while the diesel will likely receive a six speed unit but it has not been confirmed for now.
