The Cascada has been introduced back in 2015 as Buick’s first convertible in quite some time. However, despite wearing the Buick badge, the Cascada is nothing more than just an Opel Astra with a slightly different badge added to it. The car is actually based on the older Astra J and not on the latest model so it is missing some features. It seems that a new model will be released with the 2018 Buick Cascada Convertible Concept in order to solve most of the issues found on the current generation. This time around though things might get a bit more interesting.
Well, for starters, the upcoming Cascada might be built from scratch in order to give the car a more upmarket feel. The ongoing version is fine but it it not as impressive as some of its rivals.
The new car will be based on a new platform and it should be bigger as well. Like before, the car will still be sold as an Opel in Europe but this time around, it will actually be designed by Buick instead of Opel.
The front wheel drive chassis will likely stay which is fine. The Cascada doesn’t have to be a high speed rear wheel drive missile. Instead, it will have to be comfortable, easy to drive and beautiful.
The price is unknown at this point but rumors suggest that the base price of around $34,000 is here to stay. The release date, at least for the concept, will likely be set for the early 2018. The production car should arrive shortly after that.
How it will look
Like we said, the 2018 Buick Cascada Convertible Concept will very likely get bigger. This will be achieved with the help of GM’s new modular architecture which has been seen on a few cars so far.
The design will most likely be inspired by that of the Regal which is currently one of their better selling models.
The front end should get a bit more striking to look at but the profile as well as the back will be kept a bit closer to what is currently available.
Inside the cabin
The current Cascada can be regarded as a better equipped Astra. The new one on the other hand will be everything but.
The dashboard, steering wheel and the seats arrangement is now expected to get a bit more unique.
The actual design will be closely related to that of the upcoming Regal but the materials as well as the feel provided by the car will be greatly improved.
Like before, it will only be able to house up to four adults but this time around there should be a bit more space available.
It seems that the 2018 Buick Cascada Convertible Concept will be launched with just one engine. Its production version on the other hand is expected to offer at least two different powertrains.
The base car could receive an updated 1.5 liter turbocharged inline 4 with around 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. This would be very similar to the ongoing model while being a tad more efficient than before.
As a high performance offering, a 2 liter turbocharged mill with over 260 horsepower might also be released. Both engines would only be available with GM’s new nine speed automatic and both of them would come as standard with front wheel drive.
An all wheel drive model, even though possible, is highly unlikely at this point. It would add too much weight and it would make the car drive worse than before.
A manual is possible, but not on the Buick version but on the European model. A hybrid has also been rumored for a while and it might be released a few years after the base model.
