Even though BMW basically started the trend of high performance SUVs, they have been losing ground against their rivals. Currently the X5 and X6 are still some of the best on the market. However, BMW still doesn’t have a seven seats model to compete with the Q7 or the Mercedes GLS. Because of that, they started to lose quite a bit of sales when compared to their rivals. In order to change that, they will release a new car with the 2018 BMW X7 M. This will share its platform with the X5 but it will have a longer wheelbase. So far not much is known about it but BMW did confirm the car all the way back in 2014. Since then not much information has been released which is quite unusual.
Why 2018 BMW X7 M
Well, one of the reasons BMW did not release the car so far was mostly because they had to focus on other models. Now that the work on these is done, we expect to see at least a few development mules in the upcoming months.
The X7 will likely be the car BMW needs to become once again one of the top manufacturers out there. The release date for the car has been set for 2018 and a few weeks ago, the BMW X7 M has also been suggested to be released in 2019.
This model is still not official but it just might considering it would become a great addition for the M Division. The price will likely be well over $100,000, most likely neighboring $150,000.
It seems that there will be a few different versions of the X7. There is going to be a highly luxurious four seats model which will look completely different than the rest. The seven seats model will be the base version and the one the BMW X7 M will most likely be based on.
The exterior will definitely go through a few changes such as a more aggressive aerodynamic kit, larger wheels, a quad-exhaust system and a few unique colors. However, unlike most other M cars, the X7 will more than likely keep a more subtle design in order to better compete with the RS Q7.
Like we mentioned, the M will more than likely be based on the seven seats model. This means that the passengers will benefit from pretty much the same amount of room as in the X5.
However, the materials as well as the design will be new. Some suggested that the X7 will borrow quite a bit from the 7 Series and this might not be as far fetched as we first thought.
Over the base model the M will likely benefit from Recaro seats and contrasting stitching as well as a unique instrument cluster.
Under the hood
Many people suggested that the 2018 BMW X7 M would get a twin-turbocharged V12 petrol engine. While this would be very interesting, it is highly unlikely. Like most other manufacturers, BMW and their M Division embraced downsizing.
This means that the X7 M will more than likely feature a smaller V8 petrol engine with a displacement between 4 and 5 liters. It still is unclear if it will be the already well known 4.4 liter unit or an entirely new engine. At this point it seems that the M will provide over 600 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque.
Also, despite being a large seven seats crossover, the car is expected to hit 60 MPH in less than 4 seconds and hit a limited top speed of over 150 MPH. All wheel drive should be standard considering its class. Also, the X7 M might get a performance package which may just offer it the title of the fastest SUV in the World.
