The X6 is the car that started the trend of coupe-inspired crossover and it is currently the best selling model in its class. Back in 2014 it was heavily restyled and introduced as the second generation. However, not that many people know that the car was nothing more than just a large facelift. In order to spring some life into the model, the 2018 BMW X6 will be an entirely new vehicle. Even though it comes after a relatively short period of time, BMW will do this move in order to keep their leader position on the market with both the X5 and X6.
Over the ongoing model, the new car is going to be based on BMW’s all new modular CLAR architecture. This will combine aluminum, high strength steel and carbon fiber for a much more rigid chassis than before.
The actual weight of the car on the other hand will not go down by a significant margin. Many reports suggest at a saving of just around 200 pounds which is not all that much for a car that usually weighs well over 4,000 pounds.
The car will most likely be released alongside the all new X5 closer to the end of 2017. Its price should not change all that much. This means that a base model will likely start at around $62,000 with the top end model going for well over $80,000.
2018 BMW X6 Design
The selling point for the current model has been the way it looked and this will not change for the 2018 BMW X6.
Even though the car has not been released, if we take a look at BMW’s other cars then it is safe to assume that the X6 will closely follow the original.
From the profile and from the back the differences will be hard to spot. Expect it to get new wheels, new color options, likely new air vents on the sides as well as new tail lights.
However, most of the skin on the car will be the same as before. The front on the other hand will get a bit more attention.
Here we expect to see a more similar face to that of the latest BMW 7 Series with the new headlights design and a larger kidney-grille.
Inside the cabin
As we mentioned above, the changes will be kept to a minimum in order to give the car continuity. However, despite that the cabin is expected to have a lot more in common with the latest 7 Series.
Expect it to feature better materials than before as well as a better driving position. The latter will be possible thanks to the new chassis which will free up some room inside the cabin.
The big change here will be the addition of a luxury model. This will feature just four individual seats, much better materials than the standard car as well as more features for the rear passengers.
While it has not been confirmed, the model is more than likely going to be released shortly after the launch of the regular car.
What will power it?
The 2018 BMW X6 is expected to feature very similar engines to the ongoing model. The base car should continue with a 3 liter inline 6 petrol engine with little over 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.
Both the X6 50i and the X6 M are expected to ditch the old 4.4 liter V8 in the favor of a smaller 4 liter unit. This would be part of BMW’s modular engine architecture and it would be capable of roughly the same outputs levels.
The 3 liter inline 6 diesel on the other hand is likely going to be carried over with little to no changes at all.
