At the 2016 Paris Auto Show BMW released the X2 Concept, a tough-looking compact crossover meant to showcase their new design scheme. However, it seems that this is not the end of this name. In fact, not that long ago the 2018 BMW X2 was confirmed. The car will be slotted right between the X1 and X3 and it will share its platform with the X1. The two will be similar in size but the X2 is expected to become the better selling model of the two. Why? Well, it will get a better overall design and it will likely receive more features inside and out.
More details about 2018 BMW X2
The car is set to be officially released by the end of the year while the US model should follow shortly after. Like the X1 it is going to feature the same UKL front-wheel drive chassis. This is a bit disappointing considering most of their other cars which are all rear wheel drive. However, this will only be a problem for those looking for the best driving crossover out there.
For all of its other customers the X2 will prove to be quite impressive. Thanks to its front wheel drive platform and horizontal engine, the car will feature considerably more room inside the cabin than some of its rivals. The price is still unknown but it seems it may cost in excess of $35,000 which is quite a bit for a car this size.
One of the most important aspects about the 2018 BMW X2 is going to be the way it looks. So far it seems that it will be quite impressive. For starters, the car is not going to look like a miniature version of the X4 or X6. Instead, it will come with a brand new design never seen on a BMW crossover up to this point.
The front end is expected to be slightly more aggressive than the X1 while the back will be completely revised. Instead of the sedan-look found on the X4, the car will feature a curvier tailgate, more similar to what the Range Rover Evoque has to offer. This type of design doesn’t trade the rear headroom and it actually makes the car feel like a completely new car and not just like an afterthought.
We have no doubt about the fact the 2018 BMW X2 is going to be identical to the X1. This has been the case with all the other models and we don’t feel like this is going to change anytime soon. Unlike the X1 though, the X2 may feature a four-seats model. This would still use a bench seat in the back but where the usual middle seat would be the car would feature a center console with an armrest.

Under the hood
Being front wheel drive, the X2 won’t be able to feature a large six cylinder engine. Instead it will likely come with the same powertrains usually found on the X1, with only minor differences. The base model is likely going to be the sDrive 20i while the top end model should use the xDrive 25i moniker. The engines will offer outputs between 189 horsepower for the base unit and up to 228 horsepower for the top end petrol engine. There should also be a 2 liter diesel ranging from 148 all the way up to 228 horsepower. Front and all wheel drive will be available across the range with the exception being the top end models. Some also suggested that this model may receive an M version. This could use a modified 2 liter turbocharged-four unit with north of 300 horsepower. The 1.5 liter hybrid from the X1 is still uncertain at this point.
