The 2018 Audi TT RS has been first announced back in 2016 and it has been released months after being confirmed. Even though it may not look like it, the car is actually a rather big improvement over its predecessor. For starters, the new model is actually based on VW’s MQB modular architecture. Thanks to that it makes heavier use of aluminum and high strength steel, so it is both lighter and more rigid. The car also boasts an improved engine as well as a new design with the end result being one of the fastest cars of its kind.

In detail

One of the biggest issues with the previous TT RS has always been its weight and understeering-character. This is not really the case with the new model. Thanks to being lighter, and featuring a new all wheel drive system, the car should now be mostly neutral to drive.

It still doesn’t feel like a rear wheel drive vehicle but it is far better than its predecessor. Thanks to that the new TT RS should not only be faster but also considerably more fun to drive. The downside to this is the fact that the car is slightly harder to drive fast but this isn’t really an issue if all the driving aids are kept on.

The design of Audi TT RS 2018

The basic shape of the 2018 Audi TT RS is mostly the same as the one of its predecessor. However, the details make all the difference in this particular case. If we take a closer look then it becomes clear the design of the new car is far more angular than before.

It also sports wider wheel arches, slightly larger exhaust pipes, a bigger fixed rear wing as well as much larger front air intakes. The new headlights also provide a much more aggressive look which really goes well with the car’s overall performance. Through the standard 5-spoke rims we can see massive 6-piston calipers in the front and 4-piston calipers in the back which are basically the same as those on Porsche’s base 911.

Between the regular TT and the TT RS there aren’t all that many differences. The two cars share the same dashboard design with the three center AC vents that also double as the car’s climate controls which has to be one of the most interesting designs we have seen so far.

On top of that, the TT RS comes as standard with Audi’s digital instrument cluster and with a great set of Recaro RS seats which are very similar to those in the R8. In terms of materials the car boasts leather upholstery with Alcantara inserts as well as contrasting stitching. The only gripe we have with it has to be the steering wheel which became a bit too cluttered for our liking.

Under the hood

Just like its predecessor, the 2018 Audi TT RS features a 2.5 liter turbocharged inline-five transverse engine. Even though it is basically the same engine, they did quite a few upgrades to it. This has a brand new cylinder head which boasts variable valve timing and it also gets a port-fuel injection system in addition to its direct injection fuel system. The turbocharged has also been revised in order to provide slightly more boost so the car will now offer a rather impressive 400 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.

These are all sent through a 7 speed dual-clutch automatic to all four wheels via Audi’s great new generation “quattro” all wheel drive system. Thanks to the upgrades, the TT RS will hit 60 MPH in 3.6 seconds which is actually faster than many super-cars on the market. It will also hit a limited top speed of 174 MPH rather fast which makes it the perfect car for those wanting performance and good looks at a very good price.
