The current A8 has been released back in 2009 so it is starting to get old. Because of that a brand new version is going to be released soon and with it, an all new 2018 Audi S8. Unlike its predecessor, the new version is set to be built on Audi’s MLB Evo platform. This is an aluminum intensive structure which is both stronger and lighter than that of its predecessor. While it is a big step up, it could have been better. The car was actually meant to be built on Porsche’s rear wheel drive architecture but Audi’s CEO changed his mind at the last second. Even so, the MLB Evo still provides plenty of useful features for the S8 but more on that later.
The car hasn’t been revealed just yet so things could still change until its official release. However, the new S8 has been spied testing on the open road and it looks quite impressive. The car sports a brand new design and it also seems larger than its predecessor. The price hasn’t been revealed for now but we wouldn’t expect much to change. In fact a base price of around $116,000 is still a real possibility.
2018 Audi S8 Design
As we said, likely the most dramatic change for the 2018 Audi S8 is the way it looks. Even though its design hasn’t been shown just yet, the camouflaged prototype gives us a pretty good idea about the finished product. It seems the car will get an entirely new front end very similar to what Audi released on their latest concepts.
The grille gets wider but slimmer while the headlights get a much more aggressive look. Both the front and rear bumpers seem to better fit the car than before while the wheels seem to stick out a bit more. In fact the entire car seems both wider and lower which is likely due to the new chassis.
Interior of Audi S8
The new S8 will borrow heavily from the regular A8 which is set to receive a more minimalist-looking interior than before. Most rumors suggest at this point it will be quite similar to the Q7. The dashboard is set to get a very wide vent for the front passengers. The center screen might be ditched altogether in favor of an instrument cluster-mounted display.
This would free up some space for the usual climate controls. The materials are expected to be among the best in its class. Over the regular A8 the 2018 Audi S8 is set to get better seats front and back, Alcantara upholstery as well as contrasting stitching. Also, instead of the usual aluminum inserts the car will more than likely receive a good amount of carbon fiber.
Under the hood
The outgoing model of the S8 is being powered by a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8. This engine is currently capable of 605 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque in the Plus version of the car. The 2018 S8 is more than likely going to at least match that while being powered by the same engine. From the spy shots and videos it is quite clear the new S8 isn’t powered by a V6 but rather by a larger V8.
This is more than likely Audi’s already well known V8 and not the Porsche developed unit. A more powerful version of the S8, likely still wearing the “Plus” badge, is still a real possibility. Expect this to deliver closer to 640 horsepower and over 560 lb-ft of torque. This would easily make it one of the most powerful sedans in the world. Like before, the quattro all wheel drive system will be standard while an 8 speed automatic provided by ZF will likely be the only option.
