A couple of years ago some rumors about a new Alfa Spider emerged and at first many people thought that the new model would be the one developed in cooperation with Mazda. However, it became clear that the Mazda-based car would be released under the Fiat brand which also means that the upcoming 2018 Alfa Romeo Spider is very likely going to be an entirely new model. While there isn’t much official information about it just yet, considering that the FCA-group wants to release up to eight new models by 2018, it is safe to assume that the upcoming Spider will be a rear wheel drive convertible loosely based on the Giulia sedan.
This will make it a very nice car to drive considering that the Giulia easily wins its class in terms of driving characteristics and the engines available on it will be more than enough for the upcoming Spider.
2018 Alfa Romeo Spider Price and Release date
The base price is still unknown but it is quite clear that the car will be cheaper than the 4C. This is great news because it will give people the chance to own a great Italian sports car without having to pay much more than $45,000 for a base model.
The release date will likely be set for the last quarter of 2017 which will allow them to make the car available for sale in the early 2018.
Engine of 2018 Alfa Romeo Spider
Under the hood of the 2018 Alfa Romeo Spider we are very likely going to find the same engines found on the Giulia. This will make it a really interesting alternative for those looking at the convertible BMW 4 Series with the added benefit of the Italian design.
The base model should get a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine that will develop little over 270 horsepower. Unlike the sedan, a 6 speed manual as well as the rear wheel drive system are going to be offered as standard. An automatic as well as an all wheel drive system are also likely to be offered as optional extras.
The higher end models of the car will likely make use of a 3 liter naturally aspirated or turbocharged V6 with outputs ranging from 300 to 400 horsepower and up to 400 lb-ft of torque. A 2.9 liter twin-turbocharged V6 might also be offered on the QV model, car which will make more than 500 horsepower and nearly 500 lb-ft of torque.
Unlike the sedan, an automatic is likely going to be the only option and the car will only come in rear wheel drive configuration. Performance wise it should be nearly identical to the sedan but with slightly worse 0 to 60 MPH times due to the added weight of the convertible.
Alfa Romeo Spider Design
Design wise, there are some rumors which suggest that the 2018 Alfa Romeo Spider is going to be sold as the convertible version of the Giulia.
This means that the front end of the car as well as some of its details will be identical to the sedan but at the back the car will come with its own unique twist which will set it apart from the rest.
Interior of Alfa Romeo Spider
Inside the cabin, the Spider will likely offer a rather similar interior to that of the sedan but the seats, materials as well as the equipment levels are going to be different.
Also, while some said that the car will come with a metal roof, it now seems that a cloth cover is very likely going to be the only option which will give it more character as well as it will allow for faster operation.
At this point in time we are still waiting to see if Alfa will decide for a two-seats convertible or they will go for a 2+2 design.
