The CX-5 is not what we would call an old car. However, it has been released back in 2012 and its competitors all received a lot of updates in the meantime. This makes it less relevant today and this will have to change soon. It seems that the upcoming 2017 Mazda CX-5 will be mid-life update of the car which many expected. This should come with new engines, an improved running gear and many other extras that will make the new CX-5 a better all around package. Even though not much has been said, the car should be released by the end of 2016 or early 2017.
2017 Mazda CX-5 Review
Its production version will likely follow shortly and it should become available in showrooms by the mid of 2017. While it will be a rather big update, the facelift will likely still look quite similar to the ongoing model. This is because the CX-5 is the first to use Mazda’s all new design scheme which has been since on all of their other cars. However, while it will look similar, it should make use of a few unique updates.
For starters, the new 2017 Mazda CX-5 should adopt the same front end as the latest CX-4. This is a very interesting car but it is only available for China. The CX-5 on the other hand is expected to be the Global version of the same car. Up front it will use Mazda’s new grille design where it spans all the way to the core of the headlights.
On top of that the new model should get slightly bulkier. This will be achieved with wider wheel arches and a more curved roof. We do hope that these changes will be kept to a minimum in order to keep the CX-5’s usability just as high as before.
At the back, the rather raked tailgate should not be present. Instead, the car will likely borrow heavily from the current model with the only real changes being the tail lights and possibly the bumper.
Interior of Mazda CX-5
Inside things are going to be a bit less striking. Here, the new CX-5 will be pretty much identical to the CX-4. The two should share the same center console with the pop-up infotainment screen. While not the greatest implementation, this is usually better than taking too much space on the center console.
Unlike in the CX-4 though, the CX-5 will feature more room on the back seats as well as slightly more legroom and headroom. The materials and equipment level on the other hand are both going to be pretty much identical.
Mazda CX-5 Engine
Like with most of their cars, the new 2017 Mazda CX-5 will most likely feature the same three engines as before. In the US the 2.0 liter inline 4 will remain the base option. This should now provide a slightly improved 162 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque.
The optional 2.5 liter engine on the other hand is likely still going to make 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. Both of these should receive the same six speed manual or six speed automatic as before. In Europe the car will also be available with an optional 2.0 liter diesel with outputs ranging from 150 to 190 horsepower.
The interesting part would be a new 2.5 liter turbocharged inline 4 from the CX-9. This engine would be offered on a high performance version of the crossover but only equipped with all wheel drive. It should be able to provide close to 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.
This amount of power would make the CX-5 one of the most powerful crossovers in its class. It would also open an entirely new segment of the market for Mazda which is always a good thing.
