The second generation of the Q60 has been revealed for the 2016 model year and so far the car has been a success. Despite still using the older Nissan FM architecture, all the upgrades Infiniti did to it made the Q60 drive and feel considerably better than its predecessor. Also, starting at just under $40,000, the Q60 is usually not only cheaper but also better built and equipped than some of its rivals. This allowed Infiniti to focus on improving it so the 2017 version is better than ever before. They also released a concept car not that long ago which is meant to attract more attention to the Q60.
The 2017 Infiniti Q60 Project Black S Concept has been revealed in order to showcase Infiniti’s partnership with Renault’s F1 division. In fact the car has been engineered with F1 technologies, so it not only looks better but it should also drive considerably better than before.
So far not much has been said about a possible limited production run. This is still not out of the question, especially since Infiniti has to face rivals with more than 500 horsepower at times. If it will eventually hit the market then it might become one of their most impressive models released to date.
Under the hood
The largest change for the 2017 Infiniti Q60 Project Black S Concept has to be its engine. The car is actually using the same 3 liter twin-turbocharged V6 that is found on the regular Q60 or the upcoming Red Sport model. However, it does feature a unique system with Renault’s F1 energy recovering system.
This will charge a set of lithium-ion battery during deceleration and it will power two individual electric motors. One of these will be attached to the crankshaft of the V6 gas engine while the other will spin the turbochargers faster. The end result is expected to be an even 500 horsepower and likely considerably more torque than the regular V6. The electric system doesn’t only mean a higher output.
The electric turbocharger coupled with the electric motor found on the crank means that the regular turbo-lag will be reduced to nothing. This should allow the Q60 Project Black S to accelerate much faster than the regular Red Sport and especially so during rolling accelerations. With all these upgrades, the car remains rear wheel drive and it seems the transmission won’t change much either.

In order to stand out as much as possible, the 2017 Infiniti Q60 Project Black S Concept also features a rather aggressive body kit. In fact the car may be considered pretty much all new when it comes to the exterior panels. It only shares its doors, rear quarter panels and roof with the usual Q60.
The front bumper has a much more aggressive splitter, the hood sports two large bulges on the sides and it comes with 21 inch rims wrapped in 245 section tires. Infiniti also added a much larger diffuser on the rear bumper, a center-mounted exhaust, air canards on the sides, new side skirts and a large fixed wing.
All these upgrades not only make the Q60 look meaner but they should also give it the aerodynamic capabilities needed by a car with north of 500 horsepower. If a production model will be revealed then it might be toned down a bit but the main features are here to stay. Unfortunately Infiniti hasn’t said much about the cabin of the Project Black S. This likely means that the car will be closely related to the regular Red Sport edition. Over that model we can expect new interior accents and possibly the deletion of the rear seats but that will likely be it.
