The Fiesta ST has been one of the better selling hatchbacks on the market thanks to its superb driving characteristics and great price. However, now that a new generation is one its way, Ford decided to offer something special for the ongoing model. The 2017 Ford Fiesta ST200 has been showcased a while back and it has been available for sale for a few months. It comes with quite a few improvements over the base model and Ford made less than 1,000 of them. This means that it is nearly as special as a Focus RS500 which was one of their more successful cars.
2017 Ford Fiesta ST200 In detail
The main reason Ford decided to offer a special edition for the car was to mark the end of this generation. The ST200 is, at its core, the same as the usual version.
However, with a few added parts the car is better to drive, faster and more powerful. The current Fiesta ST costs, in the US, $22,000. The ST200 on the other hand is not available here which is a shame.
There is a very good reason for that though. In the UK, the ST200 is more than £5,000 more than the regular ST which would translate to more than $7,000.
This would make the Fiesta ST200 more expensive than the Focus ST and it would not allow it to sell at all in the US.
In Europe people still bought the car mostly thanks to the fact it is a very limited edition model and its value is definitely going to hold better than that of the regular model.
For starters, even though the 2017 Ford Fiesta ST200 is based on the same platform as the regular ST, it does come with a few changes.
It uses stiffer shocks and lower springs which allowed Ford to drop the center of gravity by 15mm. This is quite substantial and it means that the ST200 drives more aggressively than before.
The side effect is the less than ideal ride quality but this is not as important in a car like this. The final drive ration has been shortened to 4.06 from 3.82 which means better in-gear acceleration but a lower top speed.
However, thanks to the changed made to the car’s engine and gearbox, the ST200 is actually slightly faster than the older model. Larger disc brakes have also been installed, both in the front and at the back.
Under the hood
The engine is the same 1.6 liter turbocharged inline 4 as before. However, Ford tweaked it even further to provide 197 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque.
Also, for up to 15 seconds the engine will provide 212 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque which is a lot of power for a car this light.
Despite the added oomph, the Fiesta offers less torque steer and a more controllable power curve. This is mostly thanks to its suspension which also comes with thicker anti-roll bars and better bushings.
The exterior and interior – the same as before?
The wheels, while the same as on the regular model, come with black accents which further improve the look of the car. The interior is the same as before with an exception, the seats.
These are unique Recaro seats wrapped in leather with contrasting red and white stitching. The end result is something special for sure.
Also, the dashboard gets a small aluminum plaque with the ST200 badge and a number which numbers the particular car in the series. This will be the badge that will make the ST200 a future classic.
