Passat’s sixth generation, labeled B8 was just introduced last year and Volkswagen’s mid-size car won’t be changed in next few years. Diesel models in Europe are quite a normal thing. In fact, not offering diesel engine on the “old continent” would be considered sacrilege. But German manufacturer force their own philosophy and offer their prized TDI models in the states as well. That’s why 2016 Volkswagen Passat TDI is such well-known car.
2016 Volkswagen Passat TDI Review
In fact, Passat TDI Clean Diesel is the only mid-size sedan with this type of powertrain in the U.S. This, 2.0L turbo diesel 4-cylinder can deliver 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. European models, on the other hand, are mostly based on diesel powertrains and are offered with range of units which span from 1.6 to 2.0 liters in displacement and from 120 to 240 horses in power.
Back to the U.S. model, however. Just like its European siblings, Clean Diesel model offers 6-speed manual transmission which yet again states VW’s vision to incorporate European standards into, somewhat stubborn U.S. market.
Just like any next-gen sedan that came out of Volkswagen’s factory, 2016 Volkswagen Passat TDI features a trademark design with rectangular three-stripe grille and angular headlights up front, and nicely shaped rear end as well.
There are no excessive design movements anywhere near it. Passat is down-to-earth and simple which makes it pleasing to the eye, but some might find this plainness unappealing, to say the least.
Labeled as large family car, Passat is rather spacious inside. It has a huge rear seat which can easily seat three adults, let alone children, and trunk space is above par as well.
Interior refinement doesn’t fall in behind either. Base models offer leatherette upholstery, but there’s always the option to upgrade to full leather seats with SEL Premium models.
For $2,000 you can get power tilting/sliding sunroof, and if you add some $1,500 more, your touch screen display will start giving you navigation instructions. Of course, there are plenty more things that come with these upgrades, like larger wheels on the outside and SD memory card reader, push-button start and advanced connectivity options on the inside.
Finally, top grade adds 30 GB hard disk, dual-zone automatic climate control with pollen filter and rear passenger ventilation and plenty more. As for safety systems, 2016 Volkswagen Passat TDI comes with a rearview camera, blind-spot monitors and parking sensors among other options.
Diesel model’s main advantage are its fuel economy ratings. TDI version can boast with almost hybrid-like figures of 30 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway which combine for 35 mpg. Base TDI SE model costs $27,000, and top TDI SEL Premium has a price tag of almost $34,000. These can be raised further with optional packages, however.
2016 Volkswagen Passat TDI is a fine family car which comes at rather affordable price considering all that it offers. Families will especially appreciate its spaciousness and superb fuel efficiency which can’t be overlooked these days when trends dictate downsizing of powertrains.
