Even though being one of the most prominent SUV manufacturers, Land Rover had to adapt to survive. New Range Rover line is the result of these adaptations, but all-new 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport elevates this to entirely new level. Landy’s new addition combines rugged, off-road performance which the brand is known for, with contemporary crossover styling in order to make it more appealing to car enthusiasts’ demands.
2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport Review
This is basically a replacement for outgoing LR2 model which didn’t quite make the impact in the markets. New entry-level model will share Evoque’s powertrain as sole option. 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 240 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. Moreover, Discovery Sport comes with 9-speed automatic transmission made by Ford (just like the engine), which sends the power down to both axles.
2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport looks much better than its predecessor, and judging by looks alone, it should also fare much better in the markets. However, it doesn’t only offer better look, but performance as well, and promises to be an important player in the future.
Just like all Landy’s these days, Discovery Sport also offers trademark grille, albeit with quite large bumper. Contrasting roof is here as well, and it falls slightly towards the roof-mounted spoiler finish. Tailgate is large enough, but looks slightly awkward. Maybe it’s the tail-light graphics with circular setup which doesn’t really combine that well with SUV’s in general.
Being slightly longer than its predecessor, new Discovery can now incorporate third row of seats. Of course, it’s rather cramped back there, but large families will know how to utilize the extra space. All rows can be folded and leveled which converts the ute into ultimate cargo mover as well.
Interior of Land Rover Discovery Sport 2016
Land Rover has upgraded interior design of their new model as well. Neatly designed dash features accent-separated instrument panel with all needed controls and 8-inch touch screen display at its summit, while rotary shifter sits at the bottom, close at hand.
Cabin is so smooth, in fact, that most Landy lovers won’t be able to relate to it, at least not from the get-go. But that’s the story with this car; it is built to lure new customers into Land Rover world.
Safety features of 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport are something you would expect. Sadly, even though it offers advanced options like autonomous emergency braking system, lane-departure warning systems and parking assist, they are still offered separately, as optional features.
Fuel economy ratings aren’t out yet, but in general, downsized turbo four engine had already earned good marks in other vehicles in which it featured. Moreover, ride sacrifices that have to be made because of 9-speed transmission return on investment in fuel-efficiency department.
2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport Price
Finally, base SE models will start from $37,070, while top HSE Luxury badge will have a price tag of $45,570.
2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport is a worthy replacement for the outgoing LR2. In fact, it is much better than its predecessors in most departments, and should boast with much better sales figures thanks to this. It emphasizes on good, old-fashioned off-road performance, but offers refinement of a city crossover.
