This vehicles biggest rivals are Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius Plug In Hybrid vehicle, and for this model year Hyundai tried to won over green car enthusiasts with numerous changes that include a longer range and exterior changes. With green car production becoming more and more competitive, long electric range is becoming a must, to even enter this competition.
2016 Hyundai Sonata PHEV review
Unlike other vehicles in its class, Sonata PHEV is becoming more and more conservative looking every year. Toyota Prius for example comes with its typical futuristic influences that are visible on both all electric and plug in hybrid models.
Hyundai on the other hand tried to bring its PHEV model closer to the regular gas models. Sonata i already a popular vehicle, probably the most popular Korean brand on the American market, this would mean that the new PHEV model would be a much more fuel efficient version of already perfect and popular package.
Exterior of Hyundai Sonata PHEV
This was probably the the basic idea of Hyundai engineers when they were designing this vehicle’s exterior. On top of all the conservative changes that came with this model, it will also come with more aerodynamic front and rear end same as the regular gas version and new wheels that will lower the drag coefficient to 0,24. Now there are only two things that are making PHEV unique when it comes to its exterior design, and that’s its original grille and charging port.
Hyundai Sonata 2016 Interior
2016 Hyundai Sonata PHEV will come with similar interior design and layout to the one we can find in regular model. Some part of the in terior space would need to be sacrificed to fit this vehicle’s lithium ion battery and we can also expect some material improvement a few additional hi tech features.
One of the biggest announcements concerning this model on 2015 NAIAS in Detroit was when Hyundai officials announced that Sonata PHEV is going to come with 22 miles of all electric range, which is going to be the biggest all electric range one Plug In Hybrid mid-size sedan can achieve.
For example Toyota Prius Plug In can ride for 11 miles on its battery only. This is also just a little bit better than Ford’s Plug In models Fusion and C-Max who can reach 20 miles.
Sonata PHEV Engine
This model will come with 2,0 liter Nu GDI four cylinder engine which is going to be able to produce 154 horsepower by itself. This engine is combined with 50 kW electric motor and 9,8 kWh lithium-ion battery. Overall output of this vehicle’s powertrain is going to be 202 horsepower and 140 pound feet of torque.
2016 Hyundai Sonata Price and release date
2016 Hyundai Sonata is definitely going to be more expensive than the current model, which can be bought for $21,924.
