It didn’t take long for Chevy to start thinking about the future of their soon-to-arrive compact pickup. They already produced an off-road version of Colorado which might, or might not be produced. 2015 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 would definitely be a welcome addition as there aren’t many mid-size pickups with this kind of configuration.
2015 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Review
They decided to mate it to 2.8L diesel I-4 engine capable of making 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Together with it comes 6-speed automatic gearbox and, presumably, all-wheel drive. This drivetrain enables Colorado ZR2 to perform more than admirably, both on road, and when the road comes to an end. Moreover, high torque output gives it respectable towing ratings as well.
Unlike regular, production models, 2015 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 has a reconfigured body, adapted for off-road conditions. It features similar grille and the same headlamps upon a hood with scoop in the middle. However, front bumper has been revised in order to offer better performance on dirt roads.
It has been trimmed down and its angle has been increased to almost 31 degree. Same policy has been incorporated behind where rear bumper now has an angle of almost 23 degrees. Of course, ZR2 practices different tires and wheels, together with rubber-coated fenders and skid plates.
There are no big differences inside. Of course, being a concept, we didn’t get to poke around it much, but before it is confirmed for production and fully presented, we’ll have to assume that there are only a few differences inside.
Differences would mostly be easily washable materials like rubber or special upholstery, but not much more than that. Whether 4G LTE would be offered, like it is the case with regular models, remains to be seen. However, curved dash with compact instrument panel is here, just like touch screen display in its middle.
Easy-lowering tailgate can be helpful when loading or unloading the cargo, but automatic, remote-controlled unit would be even better. Cabin is fitted with Bose audio system which is more than enough for truck’s compact nature, and there’s even a possibility to opt for heated front seats.
Safety features include all standard options like an airbag system, anti-lock brakes, trailer sway control and hill descent controls. Rearview camera is also included, but rear visibility is good anyway.
2015 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is supposed to be one of the most efficient trucks in the lineup. Fuel economy ratings haven’t been disclosed, but 2.8L Duramax unit should be in mid twenties combined.
2015 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Price
Just like that, ZR2 should also be the most expensive model. If, or when it becomes produced, we believe that a price tag of some $30,000 or more would be in order.
2015 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is a fine off-road oriented compact pickup. It actually looks even better than the regular model thanks to its concept wheels and details, but production-ready model probably wouldn’t feature these elements.
However, diesel burning Colorado wouldn’t be unwelcome, especially in this form, and we eagerly await some of the next few car shows where Chevy might finally confirm it for production.
